JOB SUMMARY
The Laboratory Assistant provides essential support to the patient care team through the collection, preparation, and processing of specimens. This role includes phlebotomy, clerical functions, specimen processing, and the performance of waived testing under appropriate supervision. Responsibilities include accurate patient identification, specimen collection and handling, and precise data entry to support timely and reliable laboratory services. The Laboratory Assistant contributes to quality patient care by maintaining workflow efficiency, adhering to safety and regulatory requirements, and supporting the accurate reporting of patient results used in clinical decision-making.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent and at least 18 years of age.
Certifications/Licenses:
Wyoming Driver's License and a good driving record (less than 2 moving violations within previous 2 years with no alcohol/drug related violation on record with the Driver's License Division) is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within 30 days of hire. Phlebotomy Certification by an accredited agency is preferred, though not required.
Job Knowledge and Skills:
Skill in providing compassionate, respectful and professional patient care in routine and high stress situations Ability to respond appropriately to emergent situations including traumas and other urgent patient care needs Attention to detail to ensure accuracy, timeliness and quality in specimen collection and documentation Ability to recognize and promptly communicate specimen issues, testing concerns, or workflow problems using the chain of command Ability to follow written procedures, policies and test requirements precisely Time management skills to balance multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment Ability to work collaboratively with other laboratory team members and other healthcare team members Openness to training, competency assessments and ongoing education to maintain and improve job performance Demonstrated accountability, professionalism, and commitment to continuous quality improvement MHSC offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits package including health, dental, vision, retirement, & a generous paid time off program.
