Institute for Human Optimization Hanover, Maryland PRN / Part-Time | Morning Hours The Institute for Human Optimization is seeking a Clinical Exercise Physiologist or Physical Therapist to join our team in a PRN, part-time capacity. This is not a traditional fitness or physical therapy position. We are looking for someone who is passionate about the intersection of human performance, exercise physiology, longevity, metabolic health, and peak optimization. The primary focus of this role will be conducting advanced physiologic and performance testing, including VO₂ Max, lactate threshold testing, metabolic testing, and exercise-based assessments. This position will primarily consist of morning hours, with the potential for additional hours as our testing and performance programs continue to grow. About the Institute for Human Optimization The Institute for Human Optimization is a physician-led precision medicine and longevity practice located in Hanover, Maryland. We combine advanced diagnostics, preventive medicine, exercise physiology, performance testing, and individualized health optimization to help people better understand their physiology and optimize healthspan, performance, and long-term health. Our philosophy is centered around measurement, personalization, intervention, and reassessment rather than generalized wellness recommendations. Primary Responsibilities The Clinical Exercise Physiologist / Physical Therapist will perform and support advanced physiologic and performance assessments, including:
- Conducting VO₂ Max / cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET)
- Performing testing using treadmill and cycle ergometer protocols
- Performing blood lactate testing and lactate threshold assessments
- Conducting resting metabolic rate (RMR) testing
- Performing body composition and other performance assessments
- Preparing patients for graded exercise and physiologic testing
- Obtaining and documenting resting and exercise vital signs
- Monitoring physiologic responses throughout testing
- Operating metabolic carts, treadmills, cycle ergometers, lactate analyzers, heart-rate monitors, ECG/EKG equipment, and related performance technology
- Calibrating and preparing testing equipment according to established protocols
- Recognizing abnormal physiologic responses and following appropriate safety and escalation protocols
- Accurately documenting testing procedures and results
- Delivering an exceptional, professional, and personalized patient experience
- Collaborating with physicians and other members of the clinical and performance team Qualifications Candidates should have one of the following educational backgrounds:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Exercise Physiology, Clinical Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a closely related field, or
- Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy program with appropriate active licensure Preferred Experience We are especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
- VO₂ Max / CPET
- Blood lactate and lactate threshold testing
- Treadmill and cycle ergometer testing
- Exercise stress testing
- ECG/EKG monitoring during exercise
- Cardiac rehabilitation
- Sports medicine
- Human performance or sports performance laboratories
- Metabolic testing
- Working with health-conscious, athletic, executive, or performance-focused populations Current BLS/CPR certification is required or must be obtained prior to independent testing.
ACLS certification and previous stress-testing experience are preferred. Training on our specific equipment and testing protocols will be provided. This could be an excellent supplemental position for someone currently working in cardiac rehabilitation, sports medicine, physical therapy, exercise physiology, or a human-performance environment who wants exposure to a growing precision medicine and longevity practice. Additional hours may become available as our programs expand.
