Job Description
OhioHealth is seeking a dedicated Physical Therapist Assistant to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team. In this role, you will support Physical Therapists in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care, implement treatment plans, assist with therapeutic exercises, monitor patient progress, and document outcomes accurately. You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to enhance patient mobility, function, and quality of life. Responsibilities Deliver safe, compassionate physical therapy interventions to patients under the supervision and direction of a licensed Physical Therapist, following an established plan of care. Implement therapeutic exercises, gait training, balance activities, and functional mobility tasks to help patients restore or improve strength, endurance, range of motion, and independence. Assist patients with transfers, bed mobility, and use of assistive devices, ensuring proper body mechanics and adherence to safety protocols to reduce risk of falls or injury. Apply appropriate therapeutic modalities (such as heat, cold, and electrical stimulation) within the Physical Therapist Assistant scope of practice and according to the plan of care and facility policies. Observe, measure, and document patient responses to treatment, including changes in pain, function, mobility, and tolerance, and promptly communicate relevant updates to the supervising Physical Therapist. Accurately and efficiently document all treatment sessions, patient education, and communication in the electronic medical record in accordance with Ohio Health standards and regulatory requirements. Educate patients and their families or caregivers on home exercise programs, use of equipment, posture and body mechanics, and safety strategies to support continued progress outside the clinical setting. Collaborate with Physical Therapists, nurses, physicians, occupational and speech therapists, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to support coordinated, patient-centered care. Support safe and efficient clinic or unit operations by preparing treatment areas, maintaining equipment, managing supplies, and adhering to infection prevention and control policies. Required Skills Therapeutic exercise instruction and progression Manual therapy techniques within PTA scope of practice Gait training and balance retraining Use of therapeutic modalities (e.g., ultrasound, electrical stimulation, heat/cold) per PT plan of care Patient transfers and safe mobility techniques Functional training in activities of daily living (ADLs) Accurate, timely clinical documentation in EMR systems Reading and implementing PT plans of care Basic musculoskeletal and neuromuscular assessment skills within PTA role Vital signs monitoring and patient safety assessment Infection prevention and control practices Patient and family education on home exercise programs and precautions Interdisciplinary teamwork and communication Time management and caseload prioritization Cultural competence and trauma-informed patient interaction
