A Surgical Physician Assistant provides medical care to patients, under the supervision of a physician or surgeon. Works in surgical operating rooms and surgery departments, and is licensed to practice medicine but has less formal certification than a physician. Performs duties delegated by a physician such as recording patient medical histories, ordering diagnostic tests, or giving immunizations.
$140,000-$180,000 annually, depending on experience

Life:
You will work alongside a fellowship-trained total joint and adult reconstruction surgeon in a collaborative orthopedic practice built around comprehensive musculoskeletal care. The role brings together clinic autonomy, consistent surgical involvement, and inpatient care, so you support patients across the whole arc of their orthopedic treatment rather than a single slice of it. Most of your week is your own clinic. You evaluate new and established patients, manage acute and chronic orthopedic conditions, carry preoperative and postoperative visits, order and interpret diagnostics, and keep continuity tight between visits — working closely with the surgeon and the wider care team rather than in isolation. You will also round in the hospital and take part in a shared inpatient and outpatient call rotation. Roughly 1.5 days each week are spent in the operating room providing direct surgical support and first-assist coverage. Nurse Practitioners must have completed an RN First Assist program meeting AORN Standards in order to perform first-assist responsibilities. This is a strong fit for an experienced surgical APP who wants hands-on procedural exposure alongside genuine independence in patient management, and who wants to go deep in total joint and adult reconstruction.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Evaluate patients through comprehensive histories, physical examinations, and assessment of health status and treatment progress Diagnose and manage acute and chronic orthopedic conditions within the APP scope of practice Order, review, and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies, and develop treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising surgeon Maintain an independent outpatient clinic schedule covering new, established, preoperative, and postoperative patients Administer injections and medications and perform office-based procedures, including wound care and suturing Assist the surgeon in the operating room, including first-assist responsibilities as appropriately credentialed Perform hospital rounds and coordinate inpatient and postoperative care Triage patient calls and address clinical concerns in person and by phone Participate in the shared inpatient and outpatient call rotation, including scheduled after-hours and weekend coverage Educate patients and families on diagnoses, procedures, recovery, treatment plans, and ongoing care Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members to keep patient care coordinated Maintain timely, accurate clinical documentation and strict patient confidentiality
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of one year of surgical experience Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program
PA:
Current Arizona Physician Assistant license and NCCPA certification
NP:
Current Arizona RN license and Arizona Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license National NP certification as required by the Arizona APRN Board NP candidates must have completed an RN First Assist program meeting AORN Standards to perform required first-assist responsibilities Current CPR and ACLS certification Ability to participate in inpatient and outpatient call coverage
