General Statement of Duties:

The Orthopedic Physician Assistant will provide comprehensive patient care under the supervision and direction of an orthopedic surgeon while also working independently within the scope of practice and applicable state regulations. Responsibilities include performing patient histories and physical examinations, diagnosing and treating orthopedic conditions, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies, prescribing medications, assisting in surgical procedures, and providing comprehensive preoperative and postoperative care. The Physician Assistant will work closely with orthopedic surgeons and other members of the healthcare team to develop and implement individualized treatment plans. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to provide compassionate, patient-centered care in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

Interview, examine, evaluate, and diagnose patients with orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions. Obtain and document comprehensive medical histories and physical examinations. Develop and implement appropriate treatment plans in collaboration with supervising orthopedic surgeons. Order, perform, and interpret appropriate diagnostic testing, including X-rays, MRI, CT scans, laboratory studies, and other diagnostic procedures. Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and practice protocols. Perform and assist with office-based orthopedic procedures, as appropriate to training and scope of practice. First assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room, including surgical exposure, retraction, suturing, wound closure, and other operative responsibilities as appropriate. Provide preoperative evaluations and patient education. Provide postoperative care, including wound checks, suture and staple removal, dressing changes, drain management, and monitoring for complications. Evaluate and manage postoperative patients and communicate concerns or changes in condition to the supervising surgeon. Apply and remove casts, splints, braces, and other orthopedic devices as appropriate. Assist with fracture and injury management and provide appropriate follow-up care. Review diagnostic results and communicate findings and treatment recommendations to patients. Educate patients and their families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, medications, rehabilitation, activity restrictions, and preventative care. Coordinate care with physical therapists, occupational therapists, primary care providers, specialists, and other healthcare professionals. Maintain accurate, timely, and complete patient medical records and documentation. Monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans as clinically appropriate. Recognize urgent and emergent orthopedic conditions and initiate appropriate evaluation and treatment. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with clinical, regulatory, and organizational standards. Stay current with advances, evidence-based practices, technologies, treatments, and innovations in orthopedic medicine and surgery. Maintain a professional, compassionate, and patient-centered approach in all interactions.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills :

Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program. Current state license or eligibility for licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant. Current national certification as a Physician Assistant. Orthopedic or surgical experience is strongly preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of orthopedic conditions, treatments, and surgical procedures. Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently while recognizing when consultation with the supervising orthopedic surgeon is necessary. Strong surgical assisting and procedural skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patients and responsibilities in a fast-paced clinical environment. Demonstrated professionalism, compassion, empathy, and commitment to patient-centered care. Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Commitment to continuing medical education and professional development.

Education and Experience:

Required:

Master's Degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.

Preferred:

Prior experience in orthopedic surgery, total joint, sports medicine, trauma, or another related surgical specialty. Experience assisting in orthopedic surgical procedures. Experience with casting, splinting, injections, wound care, and other orthopedic procedures.

The Orthopedic Physician Assistant will work in both an outpatient clinical and surgical environment. The position may require extended periods of standing, walking, and assisting during surgical procedures, as well as the ability to respond effectively in a fast-paced patient-care setting. The position may involve travel between practice locations, hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, or other clinical sites as required.
