Job Description

Growing practice (privately owned-non-corporate) is seeking an experienced Surgical Counselor to travel to both our Boynton Beach and our Delray Beach locations to handle the counseling, scheduling and performing of measurements of our surgical patients. Responsible for accuracy throughout the process and in preparation of surgical paperwork and insurance verification.
Duties:
Greet patients; determine needs by closely reviewing the chart and the physician's notes. Schedule procedure accordingly. Schedule pre-op (if necessary) and post-op appointments. Manage surgery times appropriately according to the individual physician preferences and surgery center guidelines. Communicate regularly with personnel at surgery centers. Verbally inform patient of pre-op instructions. Provide prescriptions, drops and pre-op products. Ensure patient's signature on instruction sheet. Provide copy to patient. Ensure consent forms are properly filled out and signed for specific surgical procedures. Prepare booking forms and surgical/lens orders with clinical data for physician to complete and sign. Send all paperwork to the proper surgery center. Provide copy of consent form to the patient. Inform patient of the need for pre-op clearance and submit request to PCP. Provide proper follow up to ensure complete clearance is obtained and is sent to the appropriate surgery center. Verify insurance accordingly. Obtain physician and facility benefits at least one week prior to surgery. Document benefits, deductibles and co-pays in ModMed. Obtain and document authorization as needed. Inform patients of their out-of-pocket expense. All monies due must be collected 1 week prior to surgery date. Premium lens payments to be collected a week prior to surgery. Ensure proper ABN is filled out and signed for Premium lenses and/or femto. Prepare the surgical chart for the physician. Ensure completeness and accuracy. Communicate with physicians on any updates or changes to the schedule, O.R. availability or O.R. staff changes. Maintain surgery packets for each facility/physician/procedure. Periodically follow-up with pending surgery patients to inquire about rescheduling.
Perform pre-surgical measurements:
Ascan, Lenstar, Argos Other Administrative Duties:
1. Answer incoming phone calls, schedule appointments, triage calls. 2. Perform patient Re-calls. 3. Assist with patient AR. 4. Provide front desk coverage as needed. Perform other tasks as assigned by management.
Skills:
  • Previous experience in a ophthalmic setting helpful.
  • Proficiency in medical scheduling software such as Modernizing Medicine helpful.
  • Strong knowledge of ophthalmology terminology and procedures helpful.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities
Requirements:
HS Diploma or equivalent. College degree preferred. Minimum 1 year surgical scheduling experience. Familiar and comfortable with explaining the benefits of Premium lenses and femtosecond laser.
