We are seeking an experienced, compassionate, and highly motivated Physician Assistant (PA) to join our growing surgical team. This is a unique opportunity for a PA who enjoys a combination of perioperative patient care, cosmetic facial surgery, oral surgery, and long-term patient relationships . The ideal candidate is clinically confident, highly organized, personable, and comfortable working closely with surgeons in a private-practice environment. This position offers significant autonomy while working directly alongside our surgical providers. Position Summary The Surgical Physician Assistant will work closely with our surgeons to provide comprehensive care to patients undergoing facial cosmetic and oral surgery procedures . Responsibilities will include assisting in surgical procedures, conducting pre- and post-operative appointments, managing surgical patient communication, documenting clinical encounters, coordinating medication refills and prescriptions, and providing after-hours and weekend clinical support. Prepare for and participate in surgical procedures in accordance with practice protocols. Assist with sterile technique, surgical setup, positioning, instrumentation, and intraoperative patient care. Anticipate surgeon needs during procedures and maintain an efficient surgical environment. Assist with wound care, dressings, drains, sutures, and other postoperative surgical needs. Monitor patients during the perioperative period and communicate any clinical concerns to the surgeon. Assist with maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient operating environment. Pre-Operative Patient Care Conduct pre-operative evaluations and appointments. Review medical history, medications, allergies, and relevant health information. Review surgical instructions and ensure patients understand expectations before surgery. Answer patient questions and provide education regarding upcoming procedures. Coordinate with surgeons and the clinical team regarding patient readiness for surgery. Identify and communicate potential clinical concerns prior to surgical procedures. Assist with obtaining appropriate medical information, documentation, and testing when indicated. Post-Operative Patient Care Conduct postoperative appointments and monitor patient recovery. Evaluate surgical sites and identify potential complications or concerns. Provide postoperative wound care and patient education. Remove sutures, drains, or dressings as appropriate and per surgeon protocol. Communicate postoperative findings and recommendations to the surgeon. Provide patients with clear recovery instructions and expectations. Maintain ongoing communication with surgical patients throughout their recovery. Help ensure patients feel supported and cared for throughout the entire surgical experience. Medication & Prescription Management Manage medication refill requests for surgical patients. Send prescriptions as directed and according to established practice protocols. Communicate medication instructions and postoperative medication recommendations to patients. Review patient questions or concerns regarding medications and escalate appropriately to the surgeon. Maintain accurate medication documentation within the EMR. Coordinate with pharmacies when necessary to resolve prescription issues. EMR Documentation & Clinical Administration Complete accurate and timely clinical documentation within the EMR. Dictate and/or document patient notes, surgical follow-ups, and clinical encounters. Maintain complete and accurate patient records. Document postoperative assessments, patient communications, medication management, and treatment plans. Ensure clinical documentation supports continuity of care and appropriate communication among the surgical team. Assist with development and implementation of clinical protocols and standardized workflows. Patient Communication & Care Coordination Serve as a clinical resource and point of contact for surgical patients. Respond to patient questions and concerns in a timely and professional manner. Provide reassurance and education to patients before and after surgery. Communicate clinical information clearly and compassionately. Coordinate patient care between the surgeon, clinical team, and other healthcare providers when necessary. Help create an exceptional patient experience from initial consultation through postoperative recovery. After-Hours & Weekend Call Participate in an after-hours and weekend call rotation for surgical patients. Provide clinical guidance and triage for postoperative questions and concerns. Determine when a patient concern can be managed remotely versus when evaluation or surgeon involvement is necessary. Communicate urgent or concerning clinical issues to the appropriate surgeon. Provide appropriate direction to patients experiencing postoperative concerns. Maintain professional communication and timely response to after-hours patient needs.Important:
This position does not require regularly scheduled in-office nights or weekends. The standard in-office schedule is Monday-Thursday, 7:30 AM-4:30 PM , with after-hours/weekend call responsibilities as part of the clinical role. Clinical & Practice Collaboration Work closely with the oral surgeon and cosmetic surgeon to provide coordinated patient care. Participate in clinical meetings, case discussions, and practice initiatives. Collaborate with surgical assistants, patient coordinators, and administrative team members. Help identify opportunities to improve patient care, clinical efficiency, and postoperative outcomes. Maintain compliance with practice policies, clinical protocols, and applicable standards of care. Contribute to a positive, professional, and collaborative practice culture. Qualifications Current and unrestricted Physician Assistant (PA-C) license in the State of Michigan. NCCPA certification required. Current BLS certification; ACLS preferred. Previous surgical experience strongly preferred. Experience in plastic surgery, facial plastic surgery, oral & maxillofacial surgery, ENT, or another surgical specialty preferred. Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills. Comfortable assisting with surgical procedures. Strong understanding of postoperative patient care. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with surgeons. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Comfortable documenting patient encounters and managing clinical information within an EMR. Ability to manage medication refills and prescriptions appropriately. Comfortable participating in after-hours and weekend call. Professional, compassionate, and patient-focused approach.
