Position Summary College Hospital Costa Mesa is seeking a California-licensed, Board-Certified Addiction Medicine Physician to provide comprehensive medical and addiction medicine services to patients receiving inpatient behavioral health, detoxification, withdrawal-management, and substance use disorder treatment. The ideal candidate will be Board Certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) and will have demonstrated clinical experience in medication-assisted treatment (MAT), substance withdrawal management, detoxification, co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions, and application of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria. The Addiction Medicine Physician will work collaboratively with psychiatrists, nursing staff, therapists, social workers, case managers, and other members of the interdisciplinary treatment team to provide safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care. The physician will be responsible for medical assessment and management of patients with substance use disorders, including evaluation and management of withdrawal, medical complications of substance use, co-occurring medical conditions, and appropriate pharmacologic treatment. The physician will support stabilization, recovery, discharge planning, and continuity of addiction treatment. College Hospital Costa Mesa is an acute behavioral health facility serving adults, and older adults in Orange County, California. The hospital provides inpatient psychiatric and behavioral health services in a structured therapeutic environment focused on stabilization, recovery, safety, and continuity of care. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive medical evaluations, histories, and physical examinations for patients admitted for behavioral health, detoxification, and substance use disorder treatment. Assess patients for medical complications associated with alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants, sedatives, and other substances. Evaluate and manage patients experiencing acute substance withdrawal and other conditions associated with detoxification. Provide medical oversight of detoxification and withdrawal-management protocols in accordance with hospital policies, applicable standards of care, and clinical judgment. Provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) when clinically appropriate. Demonstrate competency in evidence-based pharmacologic treatment of substance use disorders, including treatment of opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder. Evaluate, initiate, monitor, and adjust MAT when clinically indicated and within the physician's scope of practice and hospital-approved protocols. Apply the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria to patient assessment, treatment planning, level-of-care determination, continued-stay considerations, and transitions of care, as applicable to the services provided. Develop individualized medical and addiction treatment plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team. Diagnose and manage acute and chronic medical conditions affecting patients in the behavioral health and substance use treatment setting. Manage patients with co-occurring substance use, psychiatric, and medical conditions. Respond promptly to medical consultations, changes in patient condition, abnormal findings, and medical emergencies. Recognize when a patient's medical or psychiatric needs exceed the capabilities of the facility and facilitate an appropriate higher level of care or transfer when clinically indicated. Collaborate closely with psychiatrists regarding patients with complex psychiatric, medical, and substance use presentations. Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning, case conferences, and discharge planning as appropriate. Provide medical recommendations regarding medications, laboratory testing, diagnostic studies, consultations, and other medically appropriate interventions. Support continuity of addiction treatment and appropriate transitions of care following discharge. Maintain timely, accurate, complete, and compliant medical documentation in the electronic medical record. Communicate effectively with nursing, psychiatry, therapy, social work, case management, and other members of the treatment team. Participate in quality improvement, patient-safety activities, and compliance initiatives applicable to the physician's clinical responsibilities. Practice in accordance with hospital policies, medical staff bylaws, clinical protocols, applicable federal and California requirements, and accepted standards of professional practice. Required Qualifications Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school. Board Certification in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM). Active, unrestricted, and valid California Physician and Surgeon License in good standing. Current DEA registration with authorization to prescribe controlled substances, as required for the assigned clinical duties. Demonstrated clinical experience providing medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for substance use disorders. Demonstrated clinical experience assessing and managing substance withdrawal and patients undergoing detoxification. Demonstrated competency in applying ASAM Criteria to assessment, treatment planning, level-of-care determination, and transitions of care. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, if required by applicable hospital policy or medical staff requirements. Eligibility for medical staff appointment and clinical privileges at College Hospital Costa Mesa. Ability to satisfy all applicable credentialing, privileging, licensing, regulatory, hospital, and accreditation requirements. Strong clinical judgment and ability to recognize and manage acute medical, psychiatric, and withdrawal-related conditions. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary behavioral health and addiction medicine treatment team. Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, consistent with applicable law. Preferred Qualifications Fellowship training in Addiction Medicine. Prior experience in inpatient addiction medicine, acute behavioral health, hospital-based detoxification, withdrawal management, or substance use disorder treatment. Experience managing alcohol, opioid, benzodiazepine, stimulant, and polysubstance withdrawal. Experience with evidence-based medications for substance use disorders, including buprenorphine, naltrexone, acamprosate, and other clinically appropriate pharmacologic therapies. Demonstrated experience applying ASAM Criteria in clinical practice. Experience caring for patients with co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions. Previous experience in an acute care hospital, hospital medicine, emergency medicine, or inpatient behavioral health setting. Familiarity with electronic health records and electronic medical records; hospital EMR is Thrive. Knowledge of accreditation standards, CMS Conditions of Participation, and California Department of Public Health requirements applicable to acute care and behavioral health settings. Familiarity with current evidence-based addiction medicine and substance use disorder treatment practices. The selected physician will be responsible for maintaining all professional licenses, registrations, certifications, and other qualifications required to perform the contracted services.
