Job Description
Neonatal Physician / Neonatologist (MD/DO) Position Summary The Neonatal Physician provides comprehensive medical care to newborn infants, including premature and critically ill neonates. This role focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of neonatal conditions in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and newborn nursery, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary care teams to deliver high-quality, family-centered care. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide direct medical care to newborns in the NICU, special care nursery, and well-baby nursery Evaluate and manage premature, critically ill, and medically complex neonates Diagnose and treat neonatal conditions including respiratory distress, sepsis, congenital anomalies, metabolic disorders, and feeding difficulties Perform and supervise neonatal procedures consistent with training and privileges, including intubation, vascular access, and resuscitation Lead and participate in multidisciplinary rounds and care planning Collaborate with obstetrics, pediatric subspecialists, nursing staff, respiratory therapy, and allied health professionals Attend high-risk deliveries and provide neonatal resuscitation as required Communicate effectively with families regarding clinical status, treatment plans, and prognosis Ensure accurate, timely clinical documentation Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and NICU performance initiatives Supervise and educate residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff as applicable Comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards Qualifications Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school Completion of an accredited pediatrics residency program Completion of an accredited neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship (for neonatologist roles) Board-eligible or board-certified in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine or Pediatrics, as applicable Ability to obtain and maintain unrestricted state medical licensure DEA registration or eligibility Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification Skills and Competencies Expertise in neonatal and perinatal medicine Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills in high-acuity settings Ability to manage critically ill neonates and rapidly changing clinical situations Excellent communication and family counseling skills Commitment to evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and patient safety Work Environment Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), special care nursery, and newborn nursery Shift-based or call-based scheduling, including nights, weekends, and holidays Physical Requirements Ability to stand and move throughout NICU and hospital environments Manual dexterity for neonatal procedures and resuscitation Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient monitoring and emergency response
