The MRI Technologist performs magnetic resonance imaging procedures to support the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This role safely positions and assists patients to obtain accurate imaging results, provides basic patient care within the scope of practice, and maintains compliance with MRI safety guidelines, departmental standards, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Key Responsibilities Perform MRI imaging procedures according to physician orders, departmental protocols, and quality standards. Ensure exam rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for use, and that equipment undergoes routine cleaning and safety checks. Notify appropriate personnel when inventory is low. Educate patients and family members about MRI procedures, contrast use, and safety precautions to promote comfort and cooperation. Position patients accurately and comfortably using appropriate immobilization and coil placement techniques to ensure high-quality imaging. Prepare and administer IV contrast material following safety guidelines and monitor patients for adverse reactions. Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record and PACS systems. Operate imaging equipment safely and appropriately while adapting protocols to meet patient needs. Practice infection prevention standards, including the use of approved PPE and disinfectant agents. Follow department protocols for patient identification, informed consent, and time-out procedures before starting exams. Collaborate with radiologists and other healthcare providers to support appropriate imaging and continuity of care. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of MRI procedures and MRI scanners Ability to perform MRI procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision of technical detail Ability to learn and grow with new technology MRI safety Basic IV skills Ability to work well in a constantly changing environment Ability to work flexibly in variable shifts, including occasional weekends or holidays Ability to understand medical terminology Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their families, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals General computer skills and PACS experience preferred Experience with computers and networking Ability to quickly learn and follow departmental policies and procedures Responsibility for maintaining required continuing education and annual education requirements Ability to maintain all required registries and licenses to perform imaging procedures Ability to follow Basic Radiation Safety concepts of time, distance, and shielding to keep exposure levels ALARA for patients and staff Ability to communicate effectively and work with people from diverse backgrounds Ability to deal efficiently, ethically, and courteously with all patients and hospital personnel Excellent verbal and written communication skills to support the physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and age-appropriate needs of the patient population served within the organization Ability to read, write, and speak conversational English Excellent customer service skills Education High School Diploma or GED — Required Associate Degree — Preferred Experience One year of radiology experience and completion of an MRI training program — Preferred Licensure & Certifications Basic Life Support (BLS) — Required Registered Technologist - Magnetic Resonance Imaging (R.T.(MR)(ARRT)) — Required OR Registered MRI Technologist (ARMRIT) — Required Additional licensure or certification requirements may apply depending on the department or state.
