Position Title:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist, Night (Coverage) -

Part- Time Location:

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Portsmouth, VA GCA is seeking a qualified Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist to provide services at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist must have experience in and be able to complete all functions of the position while under minimal to no supervision in the following areas:

• Perform examinations on all brands and models of MRI scanners.
• Assist in reviewing and entering radiologist MRI protocols into MHS Genesis RadNet and related software.
• Verify patient and procedure information and perform required Time Out and Final Stop procedures before entering MRI Zone 4.
• Evaluate patients for contrast compatibility, including GFR, allergy history, and contrast contraindications.
• Respond to contrast reactions and emergencies in the MRI environment in accordance with American College of Radiology (ACR) and Joint Commission requirements.
• Review MRI safety screening information and assess patient safety.
• Perform research/investigation pertaining to MRI safety on patients with implanted medical devices and document safety information.
• Document implant information for the Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) and the Magnetic Resonance Medical Director (MRMD).
• Screen patients utilizing the ferromagnetic detector system according to manufacturer and department protocols.
• Explain MRI procedures to patients and provide appropriate physical and emotional support, including patients with claustrophobia and special needs.
• Log patient arrivals and departures in MHS Genesis and maintain scanner logbooks.
• Send appropriate image series to radiologists through PACS according to department protocol.
• Perform a full range of MRI scans, including brain, MRA/MRV, body, breast, cardiac, neck, chest, pelvis, upper extremity, lower extremity, arthrogram, perfusion, spectroscopy, and 3D reconstruction studies as prescribed by radiologist protocols.
• Select the appropriate coil and equipment for the body part being examined.
• Properly position and pad patients to prevent thermal burns.
• Start IVs for contrast administration and in support of nursing or anesthesia staff.
• Provide support for anesthesia and coordinate sedation MRIs.
• Discuss technical and clinical aspects of patient care with radiologists, physicians, nurses, and senior MRI technologists.
• Review images and ensure all images transmit through PACS according to department policy.
• Perform daily crash cart checks and monthly checks of emergency contrast reaction kits and restroom emergency call bells.
• Ensure completion of quarterly Code Blue drills.
• Perform system calibrations and quality control tasks according to manufacturer and command instructions.
• Recognize artifacts and equipment errors and notify designated Government personnel.
• Perform minor troubleshooting of MRI scanners in accordance with established protocols.
• Initiate repair call procedures and report equipment malfunctions.
• Maintain MRI suite including stocking supplies, cleaning, restocking/inventorying supplies, linen removal, and sharps disposal.
• Participate in mandatory MRI Safety Training issued by the MRI Medical Director (MR MD).
• Update MRI scanner protocols in accordance with radiologists.
• Perform QC (quality control) tasks in accordance with ACR and Joint Commission requirements.
• Perform and document transitions of care and shift change huddles/meetings.

Qualifications:

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

Education:

• Graduate from an academic program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), Council on Occupational Education (COE), or other equivalent organization.
• Equivalency determinations may not be substituted for education requirements.

Experience:

• One (1) year of experience within the last two (2) years as a radiologic technologist or in the radiologic technologist specialty area identified in the TO (MRI).

Licenses/Certifications:

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) in the MRI specialty identified.

Additional Requirements for the

Position:

• Provide two (2) letters of recommendation written within the last two (2) years attesting to clinical skills.
• One letter must be from a practicing radiologist or supervisory technologist who has personally observed and evaluated the candidate's clinical skills.
• The second letter may be from a clinic or hospital administrator, physician, nurse, or peer technologist with personal knowledge of the candidate's patient care skills in a similar clinical environment.
• Reference letters must address communication skills, patient care abilities, professionalism, and interpersonal skills and include the individual's name, title, phone number, date of reference, address, and signature.

Do you have experience evaluating MRI patients for contrast compatibility, including GFR review, allergy history, contrast contraindications, and MRI safety screening? Are you experienced in starting IVs for contrast administration and supporting anesthesia or sedation MRI procedures? Can you provide two (2) letters of recommendation written within the last two (2) years that meet the PWS requirements? Are you available to work the Part-Time schedule of Saturday-Sunday, 10:30 PM-7:00 AM?
