A Recreational Therapist directs and coordinates recreational activities for people with disabilities or illness to help them improve their emotional and physical well-being, improve motor skills and increase confidence. Leads activities involving movement, sports, games, and other activities for brain stimulation. Assists patients with disabilities to learn to use public resources such as parks and public transportation, and integrate in the community. Works with people of all ages, in schools, nursing homes, clinics and other healthcare facilities, or in parks and recreation departments.

Job Description

Designs, coordinates, and implements a comprehensive program for individuals in emotional distress which integrates the principles and theories of Recreation Therapy. The Recreation Therapist conducts sessions for assigned groups according to professional standards of practice, expedites patient documentation and reports according to department policy, manages an assigned case load, monitors patient behavior and reactions, and expresses genuine interest in patient progress. Other responsibilities include promptly reporting unusual incidents to supervisory personnel, maintaining current knowledge of procedures, observing all departmental and hospital policies and procedures, participating in treatment team meetings and educational programs, and supervising students and volunteers. The Therapist demonstrates compassion and respect for the physical and psychological needs relevant to the age of the patient served.
Experience, Education, Training, Special Skills, and Licensure:
1 year experience with the Frail/Elderly Population Bachelor's Degree in related field BLS Certification; Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist or Eligible Patient Care Develops therapeutic patient relationships, expresses genuine interest in patient progress, and prepares plans for continuing care following discharge in a manner that promotes the provision of compassionate and high-quality patient care. Monitors patient behavior, symptoms, and reactions in a responsible and caring manner and promptly reports pertinent information to appropriate personnel. Provides care to patients in a manner that considers patient safety, comfort, and the therapeutic environment by promptly reporting unusual incidents involving patients, family members, visitors, and staff to supervisory personnel. Team Member reports to work onsite job ready. Adjust schedule to meet the needs of the department. Evaluation and Planning Integrates and applies the principles and theories of recreation therapy in a health care environment by utilizing knowledge of movement, fitness, and physical activities, leisure and social skills, and community resources in order to ensure that high quality mental health therapy services are provided by the department. Maintains current knowledge of procedures, equipment, and supplies necessary for patient assessment and treatment, and assists with the organization and effective utilization of departmental supplies, equipment, facilities and resources. Expedites documentation regarding assessment, treatment plans, progress notes, cardex, census sheets, charges, and incident reports in a manner consistent with departmental policies and procedures and the health care standards of the hospital. Demonstrates ability to use computer for accurate work functions to include, data entry, KRONOS, HealthStream and email. Collaboration and Partnership Actively participates in and contributes to treatment team meetings and develops and implements department program functions and seasonal and holiday events. Manages assigned case load, provides assistance in covering weekend, evening, and holiday functions, and maintains flexibility in adapting to schedule changes. Ensures efficient departmental operations by supervising students and volunteers in accordance with hospital, departmental, and school policies. Promotes the quality and efficiency of his/her own performance through participation in staff educational programs, approved continuing education courses, and specialized skill training programs. Ensures the provision of high-quality mental health therapy services by conducting assigned group sessions within specific area of expertise and within the area of activity therapy in general. Other Duties As Assigned Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
