A Recreational Therapist directs and coordinates recreational activities for people with disabilities or illness to help them improve their emotional and physical well-being, improve motor skills and increase confidence. Leads activities involving movement, sports, games, and other activities for brain stimulation. Assists patients with disabilities to learn to use public resources such as parks and public transportation, and integrate in the community. Works with people of all ages, in schools, nursing homes, clinics and other healthcare facilities, or in parks and recreation departments.
Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center is seeking a motivated Full Time Recreational Therapist to join our Behavioral Health Team! NFMMC is looking for an enthusiastic and social individual to work on our inpatient psychiatric adult unit. This individual will plan and implement therapeutic groups including psychosocial educational discussions, leisure education and manual arts and crafts. This position allows the worker a freedom to design and implement a schedule of recreational groups that encompass both education and enjoyment to a patient's day. The goal of this position is to help our patient population regain mental and/or physical functioning, help acclimate patients to psychiatric unit and educate individuals on the importance of mental health treatment, recovery and provide hope for their future. Plans and implements recreational therapy programs involving such activities as sports, fitness, social activities, games, leisure planning, arts and crafts, and psycho-educational discussions designed to help patients regain mental and/or physical functioning. Maintains close contact and relationship with various community resources to help develop social, recreational and educational programs and activities that have therapeutic value to all age groups. May also assist in exploring referral options to community based recreational programs. Responsible for necessary planning and preparation of therapeutic activities. Teaches patients skills and techniques required for participation in therapy sessions. Evaluates patient's progress, attitudes, behavior and symptoms. Monitors patients' response to interventions and modifies treatment as indicated in order to attain treatment goals. Utilizes behavioral management techniques appropriately. Plans and implements culturally diverse therapeutic activities. Utilizes knowledge of psychiatric diagnoses, signs/symptoms of specific disorders and normal developmental stages when performing assessments and developing plans of care. Recognizes subtle changes in patients' functioning and initiates changes in plan of care as needed. Full Time - Monday - Friday 8:00am-4:00pm
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree social work, psychology, human services, sociology or related field; or Associates degree with 2-4 years of relevant experience.
