A Recreational Therapist directs and coordinates recreational activities for people with disabilities or illness to help them improve their emotional and physical well-being, improve motor skills and increase confidence. Leads activities involving movement, sports, games, and other activities for brain stimulation. Assists patients with disabilities to learn to use public resources such as parks and public transportation, and integrate in the community. Works with people of all ages, in schools, nursing homes, clinics and other healthcare facilities, or in parks and recreation departments.

Provide activities in 1:1 settings, small groups and or large groups to residents of all ages in need of recreation services under the supervision of a certified therapeutic recreation specialist or activity coordinator. Implement and supervise diversional group activities, special events. Utilize appropriate communication skills when relating with residents, families and other members of the health care team. Maintain confidentiality of resident care and departmental information. Perform all duties according to infection control standards, which include handwashing, universal precautions. Maintain all required documentation for a designated group of residents. Promote and maintain good interpersonal relationships with nursing, volunteers, residents, visitors, and other facility personnel. Work occasional evenings, weekends and holidays as required. Assist with transportation of residents as required. Supervise volunteers as required. Use Nursing electronic software to record level of resident participation in activities.
