SUMMARY:

Aids children and youth in developing their full potential in health and education. Works as a part of the total school health service program planned by the school, in cooperation with the local health department. Functions within the concept of public health nursing, working with the school-age population in a sound program aimed at meeting the needs of all children, including those with complex problems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Meets students needs resulting from disease, accidents, or congenital conditions. Assists faculty to identify and understand student health problems and advises staff on modifications to meet the health needs of individuals. Participates in Child Study Team meetings as needed; may also participate in I.E.P.'s and 504 planning/meetings. Collects and records information about the health status of all students in a systematic and continuous manner; ensures current and new enrolling students meet state vaccination requirements. Reports and interprets health data to school personnel, parents and students as appropriate. Maintains a daily log and/or individual health record for each visit to the nurse's office. Prepares and submits mandated reports. Administers and evaluates medication. Works with public and private agencies to meet student needs.

Serves as a resource for students, parents and staff for health education activities, including providing annual blood borne pathogen in-service sessions for adults, and conducting classes on health related topics within the PreK -8 program. Recommends exclusion and readmission of students according to the AZ Department of Health and District policies regarding contagious health conditions. Performs annual hearing and vision screenings on required population of students. Ensures current and new enrolling students meet state vaccination requirements; interprets shot records of enrolling students to ensure conformity to state law regarding immunizations. Maintains emergency defibrillator.

Consults with other health professionals concerning ongoing care/condition of students.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to relate his/her particular understandings of nursing and health to the educational process conditions that affect learning. Ability to work as a member of a cooperative team. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations. Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations. Ability to establish priority ordering of tasks necessary to complete tasks and convey these understandings and priorities to others. Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members. Ability to cope with job stress while exhibiting patience and tact when dealing with others. Perform all duties in accordance with Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies. Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response.

Produce accurate work and complete assignments with minimal supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's Degree preferred. Current nurse, CPR and hearing screening certification. Current license to practice as a licensed practical nurse in Arizona.

Experience in a school setting preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

: School and office environment. This position regularly works indoors and occasionally outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is generally quiet to moderate and may become excessively noisy at times. Will have contact with students, employees and the public.
