Primary Function Under the direct supervision of the Director of Pupil Services or designee, provides assessments and evaluations of health and development status of selected students through nursing diagnosis and the use of appropriate evaluation techniques. Oversees all on-site Special Education LVNs and site Health Technicians to ensure that the District is in compliance with all mandated assessments and immunizations laws. Provides health assessments:
these include, but not limited to, general health, dental health, as needed. 4. Conducts hearing screening and threshold testing according to mandates of the State Department of Public Health. 5. Conducts vision testing, including color discrimination testing as mandated by the State Department of Education. 6. Conducts scoliosis screening as mandated by the State Department of Education. 7. Trains and supervises Health Technicians and other office staff in the provision of specialized health care services in accordance with physician's prescription. 8. Monitors the services and charting responsibilities. 9. Provides such services directly to students as needed. 10. Provides office staff training to provide health care services when the nurse or health technician are not available. 11. Travels independently to multiple school sites in a timely and dependable manner. 12. Participates in presentation of the Family Life Program at assigned schools. 13. Verifies absence of student that may be due to medical reasons when requested by Site Administration. 14. Serves, as needed, as a member of the Student Study Team. 15. Participates in staff and parent conferences regarding students with special problems, as requested. 16. Develops and implements a health plan: a. Obtains medical information from physician. b. Interprets the health status of pupils to parents and school personnel. c. Initiates health-related referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources. d. Provides private on-going health counseling with pupils, parents, school personnel and health agencies. 17. Through student logs and computer input, maintains, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students, parents and staff. 18. Monitors student health data. 19. Participates as the health specialist on student assessment teams to develop the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for special education students and 504 Plans for regular education students. 20. Reviews, plans, implements, monitors, and maintains school health management protocols for children with chronic health problems, including the administration of medication. 21. Develops procedures for crisis interventions relating to acute illness. 22. Assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious diseases and appropriate referral to clinics. 23. Provides health education 24. Provides direct health education to assist students and families in making decisions on matters that affect their health. 25. Provides direct staff development and instruction in health-related areas. Trains staff annually and as needed on blood-borne pathogens, universal precautions, and communicable diseases. 26. Monitors proper storage and disposal of sharps. 27. Assists other professionals in identifying equipment necessary to provide safe lifting and other necessary procedures. 28. Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison between the home, school and community. 29. Assists in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school district. 30. Maintains regular attendance and notifies appropriate personnel when ill, absent, or injured. 31. Provides at least one time per school year a CPR class. 32. Meets monthly with District Health Technicians to keep the abreast of current techniques, policies and trends in Nursing. 33. Assists in planning for disaster preparedness and directs First Aid/triage in the event of a disaster at the site. 34. Maintains contact with all staff members in regard to school related health matters. 35. Serves as contact person with individuals and organizations outside the school in regard to health matters. 36. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position. 37. Completes appropriate reports for MediCal billing in accordance with State mandated cost programs. 38. Adheres to all State, Federal, district and school policies. 39. Attend County Nurses Resource meetings once per month; may coordinate with community to provide on-site Immunization Clinic. 40. Prepares necessary annual reports. 41. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of general layout of community; location of school sites; school site emergency preparedness plans, and quickest routes to emergency facilities. Knowledge of community resources; i.e., medical, dental, psychological, social services. Knowledge of current health issues, treatments, medications; and preventative measures. Knowledge of professional responsibility to maintain valid RN license with other required credentials. Knowledge of safe work practices including, but not limited to lifting, pushing, pulling, hazardous waste and infectious disease.

Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of valid California Registered Nurse License; Standard Designated Services Credential with Specialization in Health, Audiometric Certificate, current CPR and First Aid Certificate; valid California Driver's License.
