Job Description

The CHA School Health Program began as a "nurse in every public school" in 1999. We were the first county in NC to move toward this model and it has become what school administrators want, teachers expect, students need, parents demand, and what the community is accustomed to.

Hiring Range:
Starting at $50,070.30 annually (10 months); final compensation determined by years of relevant clinical nursing experience.
Hours:
8 hours per day, 10 month position (Monday - Friday) 2026 - 2027 school year with start date of July 17 The School Nurse plays a critical role in promoting the health and well-being of students within the educational environment. This position requires a high level of professional autonomy, as the nurse functions independently and exercises sound judgment in decision-making and clinical practice. Serving as both a direct provider of student health care and the planner and coordinator of the school heath program, the School Nurse ensures that health services are effectively integrated to support academic success and a safe learning environment across assigned school(s).
Primary Responsibilities:
Provides illness and injury assessments, interventions and follow-upProvides identification, assessment, planning, interviewing and evaluation of student health concernsInterprets health status of students to parents and school personnelInitiates referrals to parents, school staff, and community and facilitates follow-up for secured care Plans and implements school management of student health needs while delegating procedures in a manner consistent with the NC Nurse Practice Act and supporting position statements Facilitates health promotion and disease prevention education and activities in the school setting
Education/Experience:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. Degree in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation, or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). At least 2 years of clinical nursing experience required. Experience in Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Emergency Department, or Home Health preferred. Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
License:
Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. Current CPR certification.

General knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs Knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public healthWorking knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to healthcare Knowledge of available resources and organizations Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgement in appraising situations and making decisions Must be able to secure the cooperation of clients, to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships Accurately record services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports and medical instructions Our MissionTo improve individual and community health through services, education, and collaborative action.
