Position Summary The School Nurse will provide dedicated one-on-one nursing services to an individual student within a private school setting in Cranford, NJ. The nurse will work closely with the student throughout the school day to promote their health, safety, and ability to participate fully in the educational environment. Responsibilities include providing direct nursing care, monitoring the student's health status, administering medications and treatments as ordered, responding to medical needs and emergencies, maintaining accurate documentation, and communicating with the student's family, school personnel, and healthcare providers as appropriate. This is a one-on-one student nursing assignment, with the School Nurse focused primarily on supporting the health and safety needs of the assigned student rather than providing general nursing services to the entire school population. One-on-One Student Nursing Responsibilities Provide dedicated one-on-one nursing care and support to an assigned student throughout the school day. Monitor the student's health status and identify changes or concerns requiring nursing intervention. Provide nursing care and treatments in accordance with physician orders and the student's individualized healthcare plan. Administer medications as prescribed and in accordance with New Jersey regulations and school policies. Monitor and manage the student's acute and chronic health conditions. Follow individualized emergency action plans and respond appropriately to medical emergencies. Provide first aid and emergency care as needed. Assist the student with health-related needs necessary to safely participate in classroom activities, school routines, and other educational activities. Support the student's participation in the school environment while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and promoting independence when appropriate. Accompany and monitor the student during school activities, transitions, and other activities as required by the student's healthcare needs. Communicate changes in the student's condition or healthcare needs to the appropriate school personnel and parent/guardian. Coordinate with the student's healthcare providers and family as appropriate and permitted. Maintain accurate documentation of nursing services, medications, treatments, incidents, and changes in health status. Health and Safety Responsibilities Maintain a safe environment for the assigned student and respond promptly to health and safety concerns. Follow the student's individualized healthcare plan, emergency action plan, physician orders, and applicable school procedures. Monitor for signs and symptoms associated with the student's medical conditions. Ensure necessary medications, medical supplies, and emergency equipment are available and appropriately maintained. Assist with health-related accommodations necessary for the student's participation in school activities. Provide health-related support during classroom activities, transitions, lunch, recess, field trips, and other school activities as appropriate. Maintain confidentiality of all student health information. Collaboration and Communication Work collaboratively with teachers, school administrators, special education staff, related service providers, and other school personnel. Maintain regular communication with the student's parent/guardian regarding health-related concerns and needs. Participate in meetings regarding the student's healthcare needs, including IEP, 504, or other school-based meetings as appropriate. Communicate with healthcare providers regarding physician orders and changes in the student's healthcare needs when appropriate. Provide appropriate health-related guidance to school staff involved in supporting the student. Maintain professional communication and collaboration with the student's educational and healthcare team. Compliance Ensure nursing services are provided in accordance with: New Jersey School Health Services regulations New Jersey Board of Nursing standards and requirements Applicable IDEA and Section 504 requirements related to student health services FERPA and HIPAA requirements, as applicable OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard School policies and procedures Physician orders and individualized healthcare plans Qualifications Valid New Jersey Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License. New Jersey School Nurse Certificate or eligibility for the appropriate New Jersey school nursing credential. Previous nursing experience required; school nursing experience preferred. Experience working with children or adolescents preferred. Strong clinical assessment, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to provide attentive and compassionate one-on-one care. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a private school environment. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound clinical judgment. Current CPR/BLS certification, as required. Preferred Qualifications Previous school nursing experience. Experience providing one-on-one nursing care. Experience working with students with special healthcare needs. Experience caring for medically fragile students. Experience administering medications and managing individualized healthcare plans. Experience working with students with chronic health conditions. Familiarity with New Jersey school health regulations and requirements. Physical Requirements Ability to respond quickly to student medical emergencies. Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and move throughout the school environment as needed. Ability to assist the assigned student with mobility and other physical needs within the scope of school nursing responsibilities. Ability to lift or move equipment and supplies consistent with school nursing responsibilities. Work Environment This position is based at a private school in Cranford, NJ and is dedicated to providing one-on-one nursing services to an assigned student throughout the school day. The School Nurse will work closely with the student, family, teachers, administrators, and other members of the student's educational and healthcare team. The position may require accompanying the student throughout the school environment, including the classroom and other school activities, and responding to the student's medical needs or emergencies as they arise.
