Pre-Op/PACU SUMMARY:
Provides nursing care for all patients safely while ensuring patient privacy following the standards of the surgery center. Functions as a resource for medical staff, nursing peers, and other members of the care team, in a patient-centric and collaborative environment. Performs thorough pre-operative patient assessment required in the ambulatory surgical setting. Performs individualized nursing care for the patient in the immediate post-operative/post-anesthesia period. Evaluates health condition of patients and administers physician's orders during both the pre-operative and post-operative stages.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Ensures provision of patient care in an organized and timely manner. Utilizes nursing care standards when planning and implementing patient care. Communicates appropriate information regarding patient condition to those who require that information, including surgeons, anesthesia, management, and other staff. Safely carries out physician's orders correctly and promptly while documenting all activities in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Initiates and participates in patient and family education. Assesses learning needs according to patient's level of understanding and readiness to learn. Displays an understanding of each patient's cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturity in assessments, treatment, and care. Maintains competencies to function in the RN role within specific area. Expertise in safety principles, asepsis, sterile technique and universal precautions. Assesses, anticipates, and implements appropriate care throughout the surgical process. Use, protect, and disclose patient's protected health information (PHI) in accordance with Health Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards. Perform other duties or projects as needed.
Pre-operative:
Completes pre-surgical health assessment questionnaire.
Assesses the patient:
checking vital signs, pain, the site of incision (as appropriate), temperature and respiration. Logs all findings in patient's chart. Answers patients' questions and ensures that the patient is kept comfortable. Verifies the accuracy of the identification wristband. Confirms the surgeon and procedure being performed. Ensures operative and informed consents are in order. Initiates IVs. Administers physician ordered medications. Ensures that patients are informed about the procedure, anesthesia, and attending medical staff. Keeps patient updated on any potential delay in surgical start time. Contacts patient following surgical procedure to assist patients in managing their recovery and to answer any questions.
Post-operative :
Assesses patients' condition after surgery has been performed. Ensures that all vitals are within normal range. Logs all findings in patient's chart. Answers patients' questions and ensures that the patient is kept comfortable. Verifies all relevant IVs are in check and manages fluid infusions. Changes bandages and dress surgical wounds (as appropriate). Develops individualized care plans based on each patient's condition. Ensures that all nursing activities are carried out following the individual patient care plan. Monitors patients for condition change and reports any changes to the doctor. Initiates patient education program to ensure that both patients and families are educated on procedures and medications. Determine when patients are ready to be discharged based on Post Anesthetic Discharge Scoring System (PADSS). Performs intervention duties in cases of post-operative emergencies. Skills
- Valid RN license in the state of Ohio
- Minimum 2 years of experience in PACU or related field
- Proficient in using electronic medical record systems, such as SIS Complete
- Experience working with children is preferred
- Strong assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
