A Registered Nurse provides medical care and treatment, educates patients about their conditions, and provides emotional support to patients and families. Works in hospitals, schools, clinics or community health centers. Works under the supervision of a physician or other specialist, and serves as the primary point of care for patients in a hospital setting. May specialize in emergency room work, or treatment for a particular condition, or specialize in working with infants, the elderly or other patient groups. May work as an advanced practice specialists and prescribe medications in addition to offering specialty care.

Responsibilities The Registered Nurse performs detailed physical examination of residents on admission and focused examinations based on residents' health problems and clinical presentation. The Registered Nurse assesses each resident for physical, psychological, cognitive, social, and spiritual needs. Plans and implements interventions to meet these needs. The Registered Nurse assists the interdisciplinary team in planning resident care and developing a written plan of care. The Registered Nurse reviews laboratory and other diagnostic study results. Reports abnormal findings to the physician. The Registered Nurse assesses resident for pain and manages resident's pain proactively and effectively. The Registered Nurse recognizes health problems and treatments that may cause pain and administers pharmacologic and complementary interventions to prevent discomfort. The Registered Nurse gives complete and quality nursing care in accordance with established standards of Gerontological Nursing Practice, state and federal regulations and facility policies and procedures.
