3002584949-2 Apply for this job now Job Description St. David's Medical Center, a full-service hospital in central Austin and part of St. David's HealthCare, is seeking a Registered Nurse for our Surgical Progressive Care Unit. In this PRN role, you will provide high-quality, patient-centered care within our state-of-the-art neurological setting, collaborating closely with an interdisciplinary team. Responsibilities Provide direct nursing care to post-surgical and neurological progressive care patients, including comprehensive assessments and ongoing monitoring Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care based on patient condition, surgeon and physician orders, and evidence-based standards Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and treatments safely, following hospital policies and regulatory guidelines Monitor and interpret cardiac and neurological status, vital signs, and lab results, recognizing and responding promptly to clinical deterioration Coordinate and assist with diagnostic tests, procedures, and post-operative protocols specific to neurological and surgical patients Collaborate closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, case management, and other interdisciplinary team members Provide clear, compassionate communication and education to patients and families regarding conditions, treatments, pain management, and discharge instructions Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record, including assessments, interventions, patient responses, and care coordination Follow infection prevention, patient safety, and fall risk reduction protocols, contributing to a safe and healing environment Participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives, skills training, and continuing education to maintain and advance clinical competencies Support and mentor newer staff or students as appropriate, modeling professional behavior and teamwork in the Surgical PCUAdhere to St. David's policies, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements while promoting a culture of excellence and patient-centered care Required Skills Acute care nursing Progressive care/step-down nursing Neurological assessment Post-surgical patient management Cardiac and telemetry monitoring IV therapy and infusion management Medication administration and reconciliation Pain assessment and management Wound and drain management Airway and respiratory assessment Stroke assessment scales (e.g., NIHSS) familiarity Interpretation of vital signs and basic ECG strips Electronic medical record (EMR) documentation Patient and family education Care planning and care coordination Clinical decision-making and critical thinking Time management and prioritization in high-acuity settings Infection prevention and control practices Safe patient handling and mobility support Interdisciplinary team collaboration Emergency response (e.g., rapid response, code protocols)
