Job Description

Job Summary We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Correctional Nurse to join our healthcare team within a correctional facility. In this vital role, you will provide comprehensive nursing care to incarcerated individuals, ensuring their health and safety while adhering to strict security protocols. Your expertise will help promote wellness, manage acute and chronic conditions, and support the overall health needs of the inmate population. Responsibilities Conduct thorough patient assessments, including vital signs, physical examinations, and health histories for inmates. Administer medications, including injections and IV infusions, following proper aseptic techniques and medication protocols. Manage acute pain and chronic health conditions through appropriate treatment plans and interventions. Document all patient interactions accurately in electronic health records (EHR systems) such as Cerner or Athenahealth, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations. Perform specialized procedures such as suturing, catheter care, wound dressing changes, and specimen collection/processing. Coordinate with healthcare providers for diagnostic evaluations like laboratory testing, imaging (e.g., sonography), or specialist consultations in ophthalmology or infectious disease care. Monitor patients during emergency situations using critical care response procedures, including airway management and trauma medicine protocols. Maintain infection control standards and ensure sterile processing of medical equipment in accordance with facility policies. Provide health education and coaching to inmates on topics such as medication management, nutrition, mental health awareness, and disease prevention. Support discharge planning and coordinate long-term or post-acute care when necessary, including hospice & palliative medicine considerations. Experience Valid nursing license with current registration to practice in the relevant jurisdiction. Prior experience working in correctional healthcare settings is highly preferred. Demonstrated proficiency with EMR/EHR systems such as Cerner or eClinicalWorks. Experience performing medical-surgical procedures including suturing, catheterization, phlebotomy, and IV insertion. Background in managing acute care situations within a Level I or Level II trauma center is advantageous. Familiarity with infectious disease protocols, trauma medicine, ICU experience or emergency room experience is beneficial. Knowledge of Workers' Compensation law and familiarity with medical documentation standards are desirable. Ability to handle complex cases involving behavioral health, geriatrics, memory care or patients with developmental disabilities. Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy knowledge, pharmacology principles related to pain management and medication administration. $36.00 - $42.00 per hour Expected hours: 36.0 per week
