A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

Responsibilities The Respiratory Extern- Student at Northside Hospital participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in assisting with assessing, implementing, planning, and evaluating patient care services under the direction and supervision of a licensed respiratory care professional. Provides designated clinical and/or support services.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with the management of the ongoing process of respiratory care delivery to patients, incorporating age-related and developmental-specific requirements under the supervision of a licensed respiratory care professional.
This includes:
airway clearance, suctioning, and nebulizer therapies as well as set up and adjustment of supplemental oxygen therapies, incentive spirometry, and remote monitoring duties. Participates in the educational process related to the delivery of healthcare under the supervision of a licensed respiratory care professional. Participates in the discharge planning process under the supervision of a licensed respiratory care professional. Assists in the management of the environment for the delivery of care under the supervision of a licensed respiratory care professional. May assist with equipment and supply stocking, cleaning, and set-up. Maintains professional development. Participates in the achievement of the organizational and departmental goals. Performs other responsibilities as required under the supervision of a licensed respiratory care professional. Qualifications A current respiratory therapy student who has successfully completed one clinical course in an accredited respiratory care program. Must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification.
