A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

Find a fulfilling career and make a difference with UnityPoint Health. Responsibilities Evaluate patients' respiratory conditions by conducting physical examinations and reviewing medical histories. Administer respiratory therapies including medical gas delivery, nebulization, chest physiotherapy, airway management, and mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive) for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and neonatal patients. Perform diagnostic testing such as arterial blood gas (ABG) collection and analysis, pulmonary function testing, and pulse oximetry Monitor patient physiological responses to treatments and adjust care or escalate concerns as appropriate. Manage artificial airways and troubleshoot respiratory equipment to ensure patient safety and therapy effectiveness. Active member of the medical emergency response teams.
Qualifications Education:
Associate or bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy from an accredited program is required Graduate of a CoARC approved Respiratory Care program is required License(s)/Certification(s): Must have current licensure in good standing to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in State(s) of Practice Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) Must obtain within 90 days of hire: Mandatory Reporter Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
