What they do
A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

Set up and operate mechanical ventilators using invasive or non-invasive procedures Administer high frequency jet ventilation (HFJV), high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), and conventional methods to deliver nitric oxide to patients. Administers inhaled medications to patients, such as SABA, LABA, LAMA, ICS, antibiotics, and other prescribed inhaled medications. Educate patients and their caregivers about their conditions, and teach appropriate disease management techniques, such as breathing exercises or the use of medications or respiratory equipment. Conduct special procedures including electrocardiograms (EKGs), arterial blood gas tests (ABG), pulmonary function tests and surfactant delivery. Ensure proper functioning and appropriate utilization of Respiratory Therapy equipment in use by patients Evaluate patients' response to therapy and make necessary adjustments to treatment plans.QUALIFICATIONS
Required Associate's Degree Resp Care Required High School Diploma/GED Required Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)- The National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Required Basic Life Support Program (BLS)
- American Heart Association Required Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- American Heart Association Required Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
- State Licensing Board Respiratory Care Practitioner license
