A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

At Valley Regional Hospital, patients are the center of our coordinated care system and right now we have an opening for a Respiratory Therapist to join our team. The primary responsibility of the Respiratory Therapist is:
  • Maintains knowledge of the various methods of oxygen delivery, including the necessary equipment. Remains alert, assesses possible side effects to oxygen delivery.
  • Sets-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning.
  • Performs arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis, and understands the possible complications and contraindications associated with the procedure.
  • Performs EKGs, types report interpretations, sends reports to physicians who requested them and files reports in the department, according to department procedures.
  • Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based on the identified learning needs of a patient and evaluates the effectiveness of learning. The patient's family is included in teaching as appropriate.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients' needs are met and that hospital policy is followed.
Qualifications:
  • Current State Respiratory Therapist Licensure.
  • Graduate of an AMA-approved School of Respiratory Therapy.
  • Successful completion of Neonatal Resuscitation certification.
  • Three (3) or more years of previous experience in all aspects of cardiopulmonary services
  • High integrity, able to follow procedures
