A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

Job Description
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assesses the patient's physical problems such as signs and symptoms or respiratory distress, failure, etc. Determines need for respiratory equipment, and other related supplies and same for repair and replacement as appropriate. Assesses the patient's compliance with the therapeutic regimen and discusses with the medical and nursing staff any areas of non-compliance to determine possible changes in treatment plan. In services patient, family and staff in pulmonary hygiene and the use of the respiratory equipment to be used by the patient when appropriate. Communicates information on a regular basis to the nurse who is responsible fand coordinates patient care. Provides timely documentation including but not limited to; assessments, plans, goals, care, summary reports and related data. Has analytical skills necessary in order to develop and implement departmental policies, procedures and budgets to evaluate operational services to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Consults with Medical Director, consulting pulmonologists and care team regarding implementation of patient treatment modalities related to respirator care. Develops and maintains Respiratory Care manual ensuring staff is made aware of any policy or procedure changes. Participates in appropriate resident care discharge planning conferences in service education program and committees as applicable, including Gurwin homecare where appropriate. Provides new employee orientation and educates new staff to scope of service and facility as well as new technology and capabilities. Establishes and collaborates with Central Supply in the maintenance of par stock levels for respiratory care supplies. Maintains preventative maintenance records for all ventilator equipment in conjunction with the Director of Central Supply. In collaboration with Engineering, assures that the liquid oxygen system is maintained and refilled on a timely basis and any other related functions. Demonstrates an attitude of cooperation and professionalism when dealing with staff, peers and supervisors.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from JRCRTE- AMA accredited program in Respiratory Care Licensed by the NYS Department of Education as a Respiratory Therapist and Registered (RTT) by the national Board for Respiratory Care A minimum of 3
- 5 years of supervisory experience.
