A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

Job Description

Job Purpose:

The purpose of this job is to perform cardiopulmonary evaluations, respiratory therapy treatments, techniques and education of the patient, taking into account the individual patient's special physical or age-related needs.

Education:

Completion of an accredited program with Associates in Applied Science degree in Respiratory Therapy or equivalent study meeting NBRC requirements for Registered Respiratory Therapy credential.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

Current license from the New York State Education Department and certified by the National Board for Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). American Heart Association

BLS, ACLS, PALS

certification.

Experience:

Possess one (1) year experience as a Respiratory Therapist (recent graduates will be considered) in an acute care setting.

Preferred:

Possess two (2) to three (3) years experience as a Respiratory Therapist in an acute care setting - six (6) months to one (1) year home care setting.
