Casual Respiratory Therapist Schedule:

This casual position offers flexibility with a variety of 8- and 12-hour shifts, including day, evening, and night schedules. Weekend availability is required based on departmental needs. Casual Respiratory Therapists are expected to work one winter holiday and one summer holiday annually. Position Summary Under the direction of a physician and based on prescribed treatment plans, the Respiratory Therapist provides comprehensive respiratory care and life-support services to patients with cardiopulmonary disorders. Care is provided across all patient populations and clinical service areas while ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and quality care. ResponsibilitiesPatient Assessment & Treatment Planning Review physician orders, patient history, arterial blood gas results, and clinical information to assess respiratory status and determine appropriate treatment plans. Evaluate the appropriateness of medical orders and interpret clinical data to support optimal patient outcomes. Determine the most effective methods of therapy administration, including necessary modifications consistent with physician orders. Respiratory Care Services Administer respiratory treatments, medicinal gases, and aerosolized medications. Perform bronchopulmonary drainage techniques and educate patients on breathing exercises and pulmonary hygiene. Monitor patient responses to therapy, including vital signs, arterial blood gases, and laboratory results. Consult with physicians regarding patient progress and any adverse reactions to treatment. Perform pulmonary function testing to assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment planning. Critical Care & Emergency Response Set up, operate, monitor, and troubleshoot respiratory care equipment, including mechanical ventilators and oxygen delivery systems. Assist with the transport of mechanically ventilated patients. Respond to emergency situations and participate in code team activations. Equipment & Documentation Inspect, test, and maintain respiratory therapy equipment to ensure safe and effective operation. Monitor equipment performance and make adjustments to optimize patient therapy. Document treatments, assessments, and patient responses accurately in the medical record. Coordinate equipment repairs and routine maintenance as needed. Education & Collaboration Serve as a respiratory care resource for patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members. Demonstrate respiratory care procedures and best practices to healthcare personnel and trainees. Supervise and support respiratory therapy students during clinical training experiences. Experience Previous respiratory care experience in an acute care setting preferred. Licensure & Certification Current Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license required. Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required. Respiratory Therapists who earned their RRT credential after July 1, 2002, must maintain certification in accordance with NBRC requirements. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required. CPR certification must meet American Heart Association (AHA) standards and include both didactic and hands-on skills demonstration components within 30 days of hire. Effective November 1, 2025, individuals practicing in New York with a valid New York Respiratory Therapist license must also maintain a valid RRT credential. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills. Ability to interpret arterial blood gases, pulmonary function testing, and other respiratory diagnostic data. Knowledge of respiratory care equipment, including mechanical ventilators and oxygen delivery systems. Ability to respond effectively in emergency and critical care situations. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across interdisciplinary healthcare teams. Commitment to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.
