What they do

A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

  • General Summary
  • Performs respiratory care modalities according to established standards and practices at the base practitioner level. Coordinates care planning with other disciplines.

  • + Administers respiratory therapy modalities as per the physician, clinical practice guidelines and/or clinical pathway.
Charts treatment, response and progress. + Performs patient assessment and develops a comprehensive pulmonary care plan. + Modifies therapy to maximize efficacy of the therapy regimen. + Collaborates with the physician to manage the initiation, maintenance and weaning of patients requiring ventilatory support. + Maintains active and support communication with the patient regarding progress, problems, home programs and other issues related to the therapeutic process. + Provides quality care consistent with appropriate policies and procedures, quality assessment program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

  • Minimum Education:
  • + Associate's degree Required or + Certificate Program Certificate Program Post High School Vocational/Specialized Training Required
  • Work Experience:
  • + Less than 1-year Relevant experience. Required
  • Licenses:
  • + Licensed Respiratory Therapist Upon Hire Required and + Registered Respiratory Therapist - NBRC Upon Hire Required and + Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required
  • Courses and Training:
  • + Graduate of an accredited program in respiratory therapy. Upon Hire Required
