A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

Overview
Job Summary
Provides respiratory care using critical thinking skills learned and refined through education and experience as a Respiratory Therapist. A Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) demonstrates these skills by successfullypleting examinations administered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and earning the credential RRT. Assesses and evaluates results, and implementsplex methods of providing care. Participates in the delivery of care and functions as a specialty clinical resource for other caregivers. Provides a caring relationship that facilitates health and healing. Performs other job duties as assigned.

Specifications
Experience
Recent clinical respiratory care experience (hospital, home care, skilled nursing facility) and/or previous respiratory care practice.
Minimum Required
Current state license.
Preferred/Desired
3 year hospital experience.
Education
AAS or BS in Respiratory Therapy awarded by a CoARC accredited program. Training
Hospital and Departmental Orientation.
Minimum Required
Successfulpletion of Hospital and Departmental orientation.
Special Skills
Computer literacy
Minimum Required
Basicputer knowledge using Windows Operating system and Microsoft Office.
Licensure/Certifications
Registered Respiratory Therapist credential awarded in accordance to the National Board of Respiratory Care.
Licensed Registered Respiratory Therapist awarded by the Tennessee State Licensing Board.
BLS Preferred/Desired
ACLS, PALS, and NRP.
