A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

Job Description
Job Summary:
Responsible for managing the Respiratory Department, administers respiratory therapy care and life support to patients with deficiencies as ordered by the physician. Performs waived diagnostic tests to aid physicians in diagnosis and treatment lung disorders. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities. Demonstrates Competency in theFollowing Areas:
- Knowledge of medications, treatments and their correct administration, based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition.
- Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
- Ability to assess patient, his/her needs and ability to tolerate treatment and reassessment for response to treatment.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
- Ability to read physicians' orders, measure and draw arterial blood gases, review patient information and determine requirements for treatment, and operate devices and equipment to ensure specified parameters.
- Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs of the patient and evaluates effectiveness of learning; patient's family is included in teaching as appropriate.
- Demonstrates knowledge of respiratory therapy and cardiology studies, treats patient appropriately based upon professional standards.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients' needs are met and hospital policy is followed.
- Schedules cardiopulmonary procedures for inside/outside sources. Maintains records/ reports.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure it is functioning safely and efficiently.
- Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, Medical Director and administrative team.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures, such as bronchoscopy.
- Demonstrates an ability to be flexible and organized, and function under stressful situations.
- Maintains performance improvement CQI and quality control activities for department.
- Consults other departments, when appropriate, to discuss patient care and performance improvement activities.
- Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Provides education and guidance to staff on performance improvement. Ability to plan, organize and participate in orientation and in-service training for department staff members.
- Performs management activities, such as interviewing, hiring, termination and assessment of staff clinical competency.
Professional Requirements:
- Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Maintains regulatory requirements, including all federal, state, local regulations and accrediting organization standards.
- Always maintains and ensures patient confidentiality.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
- Wears identification while on duty.
- Attends annual review and performs departmental in-services.
- Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Attends committee, CQI and management meetings, as appropriate.
- Resolves staff concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required.
- Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety, emergency management and infection prevention and control.
- Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to staff and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
Regulatory Requirements:
- Current state Respiratory Therapist Licensure.
- Graduate of an AMA-approved School of Respiratory Therapy.
- Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification.
- Three (3) or more years of previous experience in all aspects of cardiopulmonary services.
- At least one (1) year previous experience in departmental management.
Language Skills:
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.
- Strong written and verbal skills.
Skills:
- Basic computer knowledge.
