A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE
Assist in the prevention, diagnosis and therapeutic treatment of respiratory disorders by various means, including the administration of medical gases, oxygen therapy, ventilation therapy, artificial airway care, bronchial hygiene therapy, aerosolization of pharmacological agents, respiratory rehabilitation therapy and other treatment, testing, evaluation and rehabilitation procedures, under the direction of a physician and the supervision of a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED
High School plus specialized training (6 mons-2 yrs)
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Must be formally enrolled in an AMA approved school for Respiratory Care within three (3) months of hire, and maintain the appropriate progress toward successful completion and States Licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner. Current BLS and/or CPR certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
Ability to read, write, hear, speak, and comprehend the English language. Experience working with patients in a clinical situation is required.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Assists in the setup and monitoring of patient and ventilator systems. Provides the appropriate therapeutic application of medical gases and environmental control systems. Provides safe and appropriate aerosolized medications. Cleans and prepares respiratory equipment for use. Provides artificial airway care and management. Enters patient charges into MIS.
