Speech Therapist / SLP Job duties include, but are not limited to: Assist or perform in interviewing residents to evaluate daily living skills and capacities and determine extent of abilities and limitations. Assist or determine appropriate treatment, selecting activities and exercises based on medical and social history of residents. Assist in scheduling therapy services. Perform therapy activities. Brief resident on procedures involved in physical therapy and prepare necessary equipment. Assist in transporting resident to and from physical therapy room. Demonstrate to residents and staff personnel, as necessary, the procedures involved in the treatment process. Perform physical therapy in the resident's room if necessary. Reassure the resident before and during the therapy process. Prepare resident for treatment by dress/position and administer physical therapy in accordance with established policies and procedures. Instruct and supervise resident during therapy. Assist in designing and adapting equipment and living environment. Teach basic living skills to residents as necessary. Promote participation in individual and group recreational activities. Assist residents in ambulatory training as necessary. Recommend modifications and changes in the resident's therapy treatment as indicated. Ensure that all therapists' notes are informative and descriptive of the care provided and of the resident's response to the care.

Physical and Sensory Requirements:

Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day. Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner. Must be able to cope with the mental, emotional, and physical stress of the position. Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to assure that the requirements of this position can be met fully. Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, support agencies, and outside agencies. Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of Shelby Ridge which include a medical and physical examination. Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility. Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 25 feet. May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations. Must be willing to perform tasks that may involve exposure to the resident's blood/body fluids.
