A Speech Language Pathologist diagnoses and treats speech, language, and swallowing disorders in patients with a variety of conditions. Helps patients improve their ability to make sounds or use language, or develop non-spoken means of communication. May specialize in working with patients of a certain age group, or treat speech problems resulting from a condition such as a stroke or cleft palate. Works in schools, hospitals and other healthcare facilities and works closely with physicians, psychologists, social workers, and other therapists.

Job Description
Summary:
Provides Speech Language Pathology services to patients of all ages including adolescents, adults and geriatric patients who are referred; Evaluates disorders of speech, articulation, fluency, voice, language, oral pharyngeal function or cognitive communicative function of the patient; Develops goals and treatment plan in conjunction with the patient and family/significant other; Executes treatment program; Provides education to patients, families and caregivers; Supervises Speech Language Pathology students and support staff in compliance with hospital and state regulatory policies. Must meet departmental per diem requirements as set forth by management.Education:
Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology from a Speech Language Pathology program accredited by the American Speech and Hearing Association; Passing score on ASHA national exam; Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association, Clinical Fellows considered.Licensure:
License and/or eligible for licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist from the Department of Health, Division of Professional Regulation, State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. BLS required.Experience:
One year experience preferred.Skills and Abilities:
- Speech Language Pathology theory, assessment and treatment techniques; ability to perform
- Modified Barium
- Swallow studies; ability to develop a therapeutic relationship with a variety of patients
- Skills in organization, time management and priority setting.
- Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with peers and other disciplines.
- Ability to utilize sound interpersonal skills when interacting with patients and caregivers and demonstrating sensitivity to age, spiritual, and cultural diversity of customers
- Ability to instruct patients, caregivers and their families
- Proficiency in English grammar, spelling & punctuation
- Maintains information confidential (HIPAA)
- Demonstrated customer service skills
- Ability to utilize responsive customer service skills when interacting and taking into consideration cultural background, linguistic skills and age of customers
- Ability to work cooperatively with peers and other disciplines
- Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with peers and other interdisciplinary teams.
