The speech language pathologist (SLP) identifies and evaluates students for communication impairments that negatively impact educational performance. They develop treatment plans for students ages two through twenty-one, inclusive, with articulation, language, pragmatic, voice, fluency, dysphagia and related communication impairments. The SLP collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to develop individual education plans that provide access to the curriculum and promote academic, functional and social success in the educational environment. The speech language pathologist selects alternative communication systems, instructs teachers on proper use, and works with the team to provide ongoing staff training. The SLP regularly communicates with staff, students, and families during assessments and service delivery. The speech-language pathologist maintains professional certifications, complies with state regulations and timelines and completes training necessary to meet the needs of students.
Responsibilities:
Complete speech-language screenings, accompanying documentation and referrals within the required timelines throughout the school year. Conduct comprehensive speech-language evaluations using standardized assessments, observations, and functional data. Prepare formal, written speech-language evaluation reports within the required timeline. Interpret speech-language evaluation reports and participate on multi-disciplinary teams to determine eligibility and related services. Participate in school-based meetings when the expertise of an SLP is requested and/or to assist teams with student specific questions or concerns. Serve as the case manager when Speech/Language Impairment is the primary disability. Develop initial and annual IEPs within the required timelines and ensure eligibility dates are met for all SLI only students on the assigned caseload. Participate in the development of IEPs to include goal development, accommodations, and service recommendations for all related service students on the assigned caseload. Deliver speech-language services to students with a wide range of physical, emotional, and/or cognitive impairments, as outlined in students' Individual Education Plans and in accordance with the established speech therapy schedule. Maintain a record of student attendance and documentation of services for all students on the assigned caseload. Monitor student progress, adjust therapy accordingly and complete progress reports at assigned increments for all students on the assigned caseload. Review instructional data regularly and support teachers with instructional strategies that best serve student growth. Provide required paperwork to team members and parents prior to IEP and eligibility meetings within specified timelines. Communicate orally and in writing with parents, school personnel, and outside agency professionals. Serves as a resource to staff members and conducts professional development/training regarding speech- language impairment and services, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), and proper procedures for the identification and referral of students with suspected communication impairments. Instruct parents/guardians in exercises to implement at home and in the care of and use of specialized equipment. Meet all required state regulations and timelines. Performs related work and duties as required.
Qualifications:
Licensed as a Speech-Language Pathologist by the Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology through the
Virginia Department of Health Professions Working Conditions:
