Competently performs standardized instrument processing and decontamination to prevent the spread of infection, illness or disease. Works independently, exercising sound judgment to support the functionality of the department by disinfecting and distributing supplies and performing equipment maintenance, testing, and setup as needed. Integrates education and technical competence to execute safe and precise sterilization procedures. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety to help deliver optimal patient care.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES

SURGICAL

SERVICES

Performs decontamination, correct assembly, and sterile processing of all surgical instrumentation used at the surgery center or hospital. Participates in inventory control by conducting hospital rounds to collect, clean, then redistribute used supplies and order new supplies as needed. Completes routine and priority tasks within established departmental time frames.

CLERICAL

May perform clerical tasks such as retrieving, entering and revising patient electronic health records and collecting and organizing operation room paperwork and physician preference cards. Prepares and completes accurate documentation related to supply inventory and orders new supplies when necessary.

SAFETY:

Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working environment, including cleaning and disinfecting equipment after each procedure. Inspects and calibrates equipment accordingly for proper operation and records the quality control (QC) results, reporting any malfunctions to the supervisor. Maintains, assembles and repairs all surgical equipment as necessary in a manner that is safe and consistent with Infection Control guidelines.

COMPLIANCE

Maintains strictest confidence of all patients protected health information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure. Performs quality work in compliance with department standards, policies, and procedures, as well as local, state and federal regulatory agencies to deliver the highest level of patient safety and care. Retains certification and completes mandated continuing education requirements to meet facility and regulatory agencies accreditation and licensure requirements.

EDUCATION

HS Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) OR Sterile Processing Certification
