Job Description

Sterile Processing Technician:
Responsible for performing delegated activities to support the operating room team in the care of the surgical patient as well as procedural areas within the hospital. Duties are performed under the supervision of the Central Service Team Leaders and Central Service Supervisor and in collaboration with the operating room team.
Responsibilities include:
  • Decontamination, assembly, inspection, packaging, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable instruments and equipment for surgical and other procedures.
  • Cleaning, packaging and re-processing of re-usable surgical equipment, instrumentation and scopes per manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Maintaining inventory and storage of processed supplies.
  • Meeting the needs of the surgical team through support of activities in the sterile core.
The Sterile Processing 101 (SPD 101) Program is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for the field of sterile processing within our Sterile Processing department. This program provides the high-quality didactic and clinical experiences needed to help you become a well-rounded, fully competent technician. The Sterile Processing team is responsible for cleaning and sterilizing all reusable instrumentation for the operating room and clinical spaces and is a key area to a patient's outcome and experience. Sterile Processing 101 Program opportunities may include: Decontamination, Instrument Assembly, Steam Sterilization, Low Temperature Sterilization, Instrument Storage/Management, and Flexible Endoscope Reprocessing. A selection committee will carefully review each candidate's completed application and supporting documentation before the pre-screening and interview process will begin.
  • During the selection process, you may participate in an OnDemand (pre-recorded) interview that you can complete at your convenience.
During the OnDemand interview, a question will appear on your screen, and you will have time to consider each question before responding. You will have the opportunity to re-record your answer to each question - Mayo Clinic will only see the final recording. The recorded interview will be reviewed by a Mayo Clinic staff member, and you will be notified of next steps which may include a brief virtual panel interview with the department leaders. Upon acceptance into the program, candidates will be paid a competitive Sterile Processing Tech hourly rate and are benefit eligible as of day 1 of employment. Candidates who complete the program will be awarded contact hours from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), remain in the department as a Sterile Processing Technician and be eligible to take the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) Certification exam after completing 6+ months of sterile processing experience. Our expected start date for this program is July 27, 2026. Week 1: You will be expected to attend orientation Monday-Friday, during the day shift. Weeks 2-3: You will be in classroom training for two weeks, during the day shift. Weeks 4-11: You will be in classroom training for 1 day each week and then have clinical training for 4 days each week. Training and class time for these 8 weeks will occur during the day (6:45am to 3:15pm) or evening (2:45pm-11:15pm) shift, Monday through Friday. Weeks 12-16: Upon completion or your classroom and clinical training, you will complete a 4-week, full-time externship that concludes with a capstone presentation project. At the conclusion of the training program and once all requirements have been met, you will be assigned your permanent shift. We are currently hiring for evening and night shift positions.
Evening Shift:
1445-2315, Monday-Friday plus on-call participation after program completion.
Night Shift:
2245-0715, Monday-Friday plus on-call participation after program completion.

  • Qualified applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet the 45-minute on-call report time requirement. Qualifications for the SPD 101 program:
  • High school diploma or GED required and must be verifiable through the background check process.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Provide, receive and apply constructive feedback.
  • Communicates clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, across phone and in-person situations.
  • Central Service Technician certification is required within one year of hire following 101 program completion. To be considered for a Sterile Processing Tech position, qualified candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
  • Successful completion of the Mayo Clinic SPD 101 program
  • A minimum of one year of instrumentation experience OR successful completion of a vocational program for Central Service with a full (not provisional) Central Service Technician certification.
  • One year of instrumentation experience in a hospital setting; successful completion of a vocational program for Central Service is preferred.
