Job description:

Position Summary:

The Certified Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment in accordance with industry standards and facility protocols. This per diem position supports the surgical team by ensuring all instruments used in spine surgeries are sterile, functional, and readily available. The technician ensures compliance with infection control and patient safety standards in a fast-paced ambulatory spine surgery center.

Key Responsibilities:

Decontaminate, clean, inspect, and assemble surgical instruments, especially spine-related instrument sets. Operate and monitor sterilization equipment (steam autoclaves, low-temperature sterilizers, etc.) following manufacturer and facility guidelines. Maintain accurate records for sterilization loads, biological indicators, and equipment maintenance logs. Perform quality checks on instrument sets to ensure completeness, cleanliness, and functionality. Maintain proper inventory of sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment to meet surgical schedule demands. Collaborate with the Operating Room team to prioritize urgent needs and ensure instrument availability. Follow infection prevention and control policies to ensure patient safety and regulatory compliance (e.g., AAMI, AORN, OSHA). Assist in case cart assembly and instrument turnover between surgical cases. Report damaged or missing instruments and assist in repair/replacement process. Maintain a clean and organized work environment in the sterile processing area. Participate in ongoing training and competency assessments.

Qualifications:

Required Certification:

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) through IAHCSMM or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) through CBSPD.

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of sterile processing experience, preferably in a spine or orthopedic surgery setting.

Knowledge:

Familiarity with spine surgical instruments and implants is highly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and handle repetitive tasks.

Schedule:

Per diem - must be flexible with shifts.
