Job Description

Responsible for all duties in decontamination, prepping and packaging, sterilization, storage process for all surgical instrumentation, case cart and patient care equipment. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Tests and reports on any issues or problems with the sterilization equipment. Knowledge of case cart preparation system, surgical instruments, decontamination and the different methods of sterilization (Steam, HLD, hydrogen), basic computer knowledge with an instrument tracking system. Must be able to stand for prolong periods of time, heavy lifting of surgical sets, pulling and pushing of sterilization transport carts and case carts. The technician must perform tasks quickly and efficiently, paying close attention to details and understanding the principles involved in each task performed. The technician also performs a variety of duties to maintain infection control standards for the health and safety of hospital patients, medical staff, and personnel.
Principal Accountabilities:
1. Operates all required equipment and machinery accurately and safely, prepares, assembles, and sterilizes instruments and supplies according to parameters of sterilization. 2. Accurately handles and cares for instruments appropriately, including appropriate selection of cleaning agents and lubricants. 3. Correctly peel-packs supplies/instruments, wraps instruments for sterilization, inspect each instrument for use, function, completeness and cleanliness. 4. Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all FSC policies, procedures and standards and quality of service. 5. Cleans, sets up, sterilizes and distributes instruments as scheduled on each shift. 6. Handles and disposes of infectious waste appropriately. 7. Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include: the use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses). 8. Adheres to
JCAHO/AAMI
recommendations to maintain the standards 9 . Performs other related duties as assigned. Education/Experience High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Completion of a Sterile Processing program preferred Certified Central Service Technician required (CBSPD or HSPA (IAHCSMM) certification) Prior experience preferred.
