Description Summary:

This Job is responsible for the administration of sterile processing including: quality of decontamination, cleaning & sterilization of surgical instruments, reprocess-able equipment and supplies in the hospital. Is also responsible for functional coordination of the department with other departments and outside resources.

Maintain records of biological and case data.

Plans, organizes, directs and controls the work of Sterile Processing; participates with Perioperative Director in making department decisions, budgeting and safety.

Hires, develops and evaluates the Central Sterile Technicians using both positive reinforcement and disciplinary action as needed.

Provides orientation for new associates and ongoing support for continuing education and enrichment.

Developing in-services for training purposes for the sterile processing department.

Monitors compliance with sterilization procedures and guidelines for cleaning and sanitizing reusable supplies and equipment.

Provides for department coverage/scheduling.

Develops department procedures in accordance with organizational standards to insure the delivery of quality patient care.

Supervise adherence to sterilization protocols as provided in Sterilization Reference Manual.

write, edit and implement policy and procedures for the SPD department.

Facilitates the coordination of Central Sterile services with other hospital departments and across the region.

Pursues innovative opportunities for improving services and reducing cost.

Meets with users to encourage standardization in order to obtain better pricing agreements with vendors.

Job Requirements:

Education/Skills High School diploma or equivalent required.

Graduate from an accredited program of sterilization; military training in the field of sterile processing/instrumentation preferred.

Bachelors Degree preferred. Experience 3 years of progressive supervisory or lead experience in an acute Surgical or Periop setting in the Central Sterile Processing Department required. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications RN or LVN/LPN License preferred.

Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) from HSPA preferred.

BLS preferred.

Certification required from one of the following within 6 months of hire or transfer:

CRCST or CIS from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), formerly known as IAHCSMM.

CBSPD T from The Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc.
