PRN Surgical PA/NP - Weekend Trauma Call & OR First Assist Private Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Practice - Phoenix Metro Area, AZ Position Overview A busy plastic and reconstructive surgery practice is seeking a PRN / part-time Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to provide weekend hospital coverage and additional operative first-assist support. This is a hands-on surgical position for an APP who enjoys trauma, procedures, hospital-based patient care, and the operating room . The primary need is PRN weekend home-call coverage , with additional weekday OR opportunities available based on interest and availability. Our surgical practice includes plastic and reconstructive surgery, hand and facial trauma, complex wounds, soft-tissue reconstruction, extremity salvage, and other reconstructive procedures. Weekend Coverage Weekend coverage is home call , meaning the APP does not remain in the hospital when there are no active patient-care needs. This is an active clinical coverage role rather than telephone-only call . The covering APP is expected to participate in the evaluation and treatment of patients during the coverage period.
Responsibilities may include:
Round on hospitalized plastic surgery patients Evaluate new emergency department and inpatient consultations Obtain histories, perform examinations, review imaging, and develop an initial assessment and treatment plan Discuss new consultations and treatment plans with the attending plastic surgeon Repair facial, hand, and other traumatic lacerations Perform wound care, dressing changes, drain management, and other appropriate bedside procedures Assist with reductions, incision and drainage, and other procedures depending on experience and credentialing Coordinate appropriate patient disposition and outpatient follow-up First assist in the operating room when surgical treatment is required Provide appropriate handoff for patients evaluated during the coverage period The attending plastic surgeon remains available for consultation, operative decision-making, and attending-level care as needed. We are looking for an APP who is comfortable independently evaluating patients, performing appropriate procedures, and taking an active role in the surgical service while maintaining close communication with the attending surgeon. Schedule PRN / part-time Weekend home-call coverage Approximately 1-2 weekends per month anticipated Full-weekend coverage preferred but not required Candidates with partial weekend availability are encouraged to apply Home call when not actively needed at a hospital Additional weekday OR first-assist opportunities available Coverage can be coordinated based on candidate and practice availability Additional Weekday OR Opportunities Candidates interested in additional surgical experience may also provide PRN weekday operative first-assist coverage.Responsibilities may include:
First assist in plastic, reconstructive, hand, and trauma procedures Assist with exposure, retraction, tissue handling, hemostasis, and closure Assist with complex soft-tissue and flap reconstruction Assist with facial and extremity trauma procedures Participate in postoperative care as needed Weekday coverage is flexible and can be coordinated around the candidate's existing schedule. Ideal Candidate We are particularly interested in an APP who: Genuinely enjoys surgery, procedures, and the operating room Enjoys trauma and hospital-based patient care Is comfortable evaluating emergency department and inpatient consultations Enjoys performing laceration repairs and bedside procedures Has good clinical judgment and knows when to involve the attending surgeon Is comfortable taking an active role in patient care while on call Is dependable and responsive during assigned coverage Can work independently while communicating effectively with the attending surgeon Is comfortable traveling between hospitals throughout the Phoenix metro area Is interested in gaining additional operative and reconstructive surgery experience Experience in plastic surgery, hand surgery, orthopedics, trauma, emergency medicine, general surgery, or another procedural specialty is preferred. Previous surgical first-assist experience is preferred but not required for an otherwise strong candidate with appropriate training and a genuine interest in surgery. Qualifications Arizona PA or NP license or eligibility for Arizona licensure PA-C or appropriate NP board certification Ability to obtain hospital privileges and credentialing Ability to travel between hospitals throughout the Phoenix metro area Surgical, trauma, emergency medicine, or hospital-based experience preferred First-assist and procedural experience preferred Compensation Flat daily or weekend coverage rate Rate is not dependent on case volume Malpractice coverage provided for services performed on behalf of the practice Specific rates will be discussed based on experience and coverage availability Location In person at multiple hospitals throughout the Phoenix metro area, with home call when not actively needed at a hospital.Pay:
