Required rotation for call, holidays, and weekends Position Overview Lutheran Hospital of Indiana is seeking an experienced CVOR Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA / CSA) to join our high-performing cardiovascular surgical team. In this critical role, you will work side-by-side with surgeons, delivering advanced technical support during complex cardiovascular and thoracic procedures. Core Responsibilities First Assistant Intraoperative Duties:
Provide primary surgical exposure using instrument handling, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
Tissue Handling & Dissection:
Assist with tissue dissection, vessel clamping, coagulating bleeding points, placing drains, and managing intraoperative changes.
Wound Closure & Dressing:
Perform wound closure tasks including suturing subcutaneous layers and skin, applying staples, and placing appropriate surgical dressings per surgeon protocols.
Sterile Field & Instrument Care:
Prepare and maintain an organized sterile field, supply required instrumentation, conduct accurate counting procedures alongside the RN Circulator, and transport instruments for decontamination post-procedure.
Room Turnover & Safety Standards:
Assist with post-procedure room turnover, enforce strict infection control guidelines, and adhere to hospital regulatory compliance and patient safety protocols.
Team Collaboration:
Maintain regular, reliable attendance and collaborate seamlessly with surgeons, surgical nurses, and anesthesia providers to optimize patient outcomes.
Qualifications & Requirements Experience:
1-3 years of experience as a Surgical Technician or First Assist in an acute care setting required. (Previous experience in a Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) strongly preferred). Primary Certifications (Must possess one of the following): Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) through
NBSTSA OR
Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) through
NSAA Technologist Certification:
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required
Life Support Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BCLS) required Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred

Experience:
Surgical Tech or First Assistant in a hospital setting: 1 year (Required)
License/Certification:
CST AND either a CSFA (NBSTSA) or CSA (NSAA) certification (Required)
