Seeking an experienced Certified Surgical First Assist for our surgical facility located in Houston, Texas. Must have direct experience working in the operating room to appropriately anticipate the needs of the Surgeon and team members.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Manages multiple daily priorities, organizes workflow, and problem-solves with minimal supervision. Reviews case schedule and checks for updates to determine all needed equipment and supplies are stocked and readily available for procedures. Monitors operating room temperature, humidity, and medical gases to ensure appropriate levels prior to procedure. Checks surgical equipment and tools to ensure safe and proper operation, sets up instrument tables and prepares operating rooms, according to scheduled procedure and Surgeon's preferences. Assists in gowning/gloving, prepping patient using aseptic techniques, draping sterile field to expose appropriate operative area(s), positioning and repositioning patients on surgical table and throughout procedure, accordingly to Surgeon's preference. Uses appropriate body stabilizing equipment/protective padding to protect patient against nerve damage, circulation impairment, and other skin or body conditions throughout surgery. Assists in retraction of tissue, tissue flap elevation and microsurgical anastomosis, using appropriate instruments and/or technique per Surgeon's directive. Assists in maintaining hemostasis throughout the procedure using chemical hemostatic agents, hemostatic clamps, ties, suture ligatures, and/or electrocautery equipment to control bleeding, as directed by Surgeon. Applies sutures, staples, clips, or other materials to close skin, facia, or subcutaneous wound layers of donor and/or incision sites. Assists in the insertion and suturing of drainage systems, insertion/removal of foley urinary bladder catheter, and placing surgical garments on patient, as needed or directed. Participates in surgical counts of sponges, needles, and other instrumentation with the surgical team. Assists in transport of patient to the recovery area, room turnover, and restocking after completion of procedure. Demonstrates flexibility in assuming additional duties to assist the surgical team, as assigned or directed - pull cases, assemble supplies, sterilize instruments, conduct generator tests, temperature and humidity tests, emergency light tests, ordering/replenishing medical air gases, as needed. Complies with the facility's policies and procedures; Understands, verbalizes, and participates in the quality improvement processes to ensure proper functioning and protocols in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI), Risk Management, and Infection Prevention of the Surgery Center, as directed. Communicate with courtesy when interacting with patients, physicians, hospital staff, vendors, and the public - in person, on the telephone, or by email. Reports all accidents promptly, and communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace, to ensure a safe work and patient care environment. Perform other duties or procedures incidental to the surgical procedure when deemed necessary and/or as directed by the surgeon. Other related duties, as assigned or requested by Surgeons or Management team.

Assumes responsibility for competency and takes initiative for professional development and continuing education.

Knowledge :

Working knowledge of operating room procedures, attire, and infection control in a hospital, operating room or ambulatory surgery center environment. Must have ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and has equipment, instrumentation, medical gases and supplies readily available for all procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE

Minimum 2 years of experience working in an operating room as a Certified Surgical Assistant, required. Must be willing and know how to cross function as a Surgical Tech. Experience working in plastic and reconstructive surgery, highly preferred. Experience working in Ambulatory Surgery Center setting, preferred.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Must have a valid Surgical First Assist Certification/License of at least ONE of the following:

SA-C:

Surgical Assistant, Certified through the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA);

CSA:

Certified Surgical Assistant through the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA); CSFA (formally CFA): Certified Surgical First Assistant through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or

LSA:

Licensed Surgical Assistant through the Texas Medical Board. Valid BLS certification, required.
