Job Description
Job Summary We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Certified Surgical First Assistant to join our dynamic surgical team. In this vital role, you will work closely with surgeons and perioperative staff to provide exceptional assistance during a wide range of surgical procedures. Your expertise will ensure that surgeries are performed efficiently, safely, and in accordance with best practices. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to patient care in a fast-paced hospital environment, supporting complex surgeries across various specialties including trauma, pediatrics, and critical care. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for surgical excellence, patient safety, and collaborative teamwork. Duties Assist surgeons during open surgical techniques, and other minimally invasive procedures by providing precise instrument handling and tissue management. Experience with spine cases Experience with GI cases Prepare the operating room by ensuring all necessary surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment are sterile, functional, and readily available. Maintain strict adherence to aseptic techniques and infection control protocols to prevent healthcare-associated infections. Monitor patient vital signs and physiological responses throughout procedures, communicating any concerns promptly to the surgical team. Support discharge planning by coordinating post-operative care instructions and ensuring accurate documentation in electronic health record (EHR) systems. Collaborate with nursing staff to provide comprehensive perioperative care tailored to each patient's needs, including pediatric and ICU patients. Assist with complex surgical techniques such as suturing, and tissue retraction. Ensure compliance with safety standards and infection prevention protocols at all times during surgical procedures. Assist with sterilization. Experience Proven experience as a Surgical First Assistant in a hospital setting with exposure to Level I Trauma Centers or Level II Trauma Centers preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in assisting with a variety of surgeries including medical-surgical, emergency medicine, pediatric cases, and critical care procedures such as those in the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit). Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and surgical techniques necessary for effective intraoperative assistance. Hands-on experience with EMR (Electronic Medical Records) systems and EHR (Electronic Health Records) documentation is essential. Previous work in hospital environments emphasizing patient safety, infection control practices, aseptic technique, and healthcare infection prevention is highly valued. Certification as a Surgical First Assistant from an accredited program is required; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be current. Experience assisting with open surgeries, robotic techniques, and managing vital signs during procedures enhances your candidacy.
