Job Description
Job Summary Perform secretarial, departmental control, data management, and related duties for Surgical Services. Coordinate, communicate, process, and schedule all Operating Room cases, while providing optimum team support within the Operating Room. Responsibilities Arrange, change, and/or cancel operations in elective, add-on, and emergency schedules, notifying the appropriate personnel, while maintaining an awareness of the availability of staff and equipment to fulfill patient and surgeon's needs. Maintain the efficient flow of the Operating Room schedules. Prepare 6 week call schedule. Maintain daily logs and specimen records, including the immediate logging and disposition of frozen section specimens. Prepare Excel surgical reports. Add and cancel cases working with Physicians and Nurses. Check procedural circulating sheets and supply sheets for accuracy and completeness. Obtain patients' admission and unit members for Blood Bank personnel to correctly identify all units of blood for surgical patients on a daily basis. Call nursing units for patients' preoperative medication, and send for surgery patients with appropriate transporting instructions. Obtain patient X-ray or equipment as required for surgery cases. Act as control officer for all personnel entering the Operating Room suite, for all incoming calls, visitor information requests, and for the intercom connecting the Operating Rooms, Laboratories, and Anesthesia to the control desk. Answer the telephone, receiving and delivering messages appropriately. Assist with codes in the Recovery room. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact) The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department's identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients. Competency Statement Must demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist.
