Every other weekend, every other holiday per needs of the unit. Three (12)-hour shifts from 7a-730p. Work where every moment matters. It includes a 473-bed community teaching hospital, a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group, and special needs services for adults and children. St. Vincent's is the first hospital in Fairfield County to be integrated into the Hartford HealthCare network and is the system's second-largest hospital.Job Summary:
Provide service and support before, during, and after surgical procedures. Ensures the presence and proper arrangement of surgical equipment and supplies in the operating room to each operation; assists the surgeon during the operation as allowed by professional and legal standards; and assists with cleaning operating room after the operation ensuring proper routing of equipment and used material.Responsibilities:
- Independently first scrubs basic surgical procedures in all surgical specialties.
- Assesses and obtains supplies, equipment, and instruments as necessary for each surgical procedure, utilizing staff and written resources appropriately. Sets up for each procedure according to established OR table set-ups. Labels all medications as ordered via the surgeon/anesthesiologist.
- Assures availability/readiness of all necessary equipment and supplies. Responsible for assuring the sterility of the operative field. Drapes the patient as requested. Assists the surgeon during the operative procedure and is responsible for performing/documenting all counts. Assists with the room turnovers and may assist with the transport of the patient.
- Demonstrates knowledge of intraoperative patient care spectrum and performs according to basic standards of care. Maintains a safe environment for the patient by following policies and procedures related to the environment (e.g., surgical asepsis, electrical and safety, OR sanitation, processing and sterilization of instrumentation, infection control, and tissue/fluid cultures).
- Demonstrates competencies, including knowledge and behaviors, to meet age specific patient needs.
- Demonstrates critical-thinking skills in relation to anticipating the perioperative needs of the patient and surgeon.
- Applies knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures in the operating room.
- Participates in hospital sponsored educational offerings and in-services sessions to enhance clinical knowledge and expertise and maintain clinical practice standards.
- Participates in orientation and training program to attain competency in complex cases in preparation for next level.
Registration:
Required Credential(s):- Certified BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. Certified BLS Provider credentialed from the American Red Cross obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
- Must be able to become certified through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) within one year of employment .
- Maintenance of
CPR, BLS
validation and attendance of annual Validation Day requiredEducation:
- Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program required. Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements
- Strict adherence to policies and regulations regarding maintenance of sterile field required.
- Knowledge and practice of basic care and patient safety concepts.
- Application of the principles of asepsis in a manner that provides optimal patient care.
- Excellent interpersonal/communication skills.
- Knowledge of name and function of surgical equipment and instrumentation required.
