Full Job Description General Summary:

This position prepares the surgical suite for the procedure by assisting the surgical technologist along with the registered nurse in gathering equipment, instruments, and supplies to perform the procedure. Assure all supplies and equipment are available for the procedure and in working condition. This position assists the surgeon in the care of the patient while in the operating room through providing exposure, aid in hemostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with maximum results for the patient. In providing proper draping, retracting, suctioning, sponging, suturing, tissue handling and cautery techniques. The assistant will apply appropriate dressing material specific to procedure. This position assists the surgeon in the care of the patient while in the operating room through utilization of the operating room team concept. Assists in transporting patients and sets up Operating Room, maintains and operates special equipment in the Operating Room as required. Provides limited assistance to surgeons (holding limb/retractors, suctioning, sponging wound).

Physical and Mental Effort:

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing up to 200 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions of working irregular hours. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids. demands include prolonged standing. Repetitive motion, ability to deal with stressors associated with patient care, urgent/emergent care. Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedure, anatomy and physiology, and operative techniques related to specific procedure. Assures all necessary supplies, equipment or instruments are opened or available. Ensure items are charged for appropriately by confirming with nurse and surgical technologist. Assists physician as directed with proper positioning, draping, retracting, suctioning, sponging, tissue handling, cautery techniques, stapling devices, and suturing. Assists team members in transportation, positioning and total care of patients.

Environmental and Working Conditions:

Fast pacedwork environment basedon elective situations requiring surgical intervention. Probability of overtime. Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Job Qualifications Education:

High School Graduate of Equivalent. Understanding of Medical Terminology.

Certifications:

CSFA Certification,CST Cerfification, Basic Cardiac Life Support, Sterile processing certification preferred.

Skills:

Demonstrates organization, self-motivation good communication and interpersonal skills, to effectively interact with surgeons, nurses, patients, and other staff. Responds to inappropriate behavior in a therapeutic manner

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

Setting up the instruments and equipment that is required for the procedure Taking an inventory to ensure there are enough supplies for surgery Preparing the patient for surgery Passing the Surgeon instruments and sterile supplies throughout the operation Taking a count of all surgical instruments and supplies prior to the operation Recounting surgical instruments and supplies at the end of the operation Maintaining an overall sterile environment throughout the surgery Review case cart before each procedure Set up instrumentation and supplies before operations while maintaining sterile environment Assist with the sterilization of instruments as necessary Assist surgeon as needed during the operation Pass tools and instrumentation to during operation Verify all instruments post-surgery and dispose of necessary items to keep sterile environment All other duties as assigned Requirements Excellent communication skills with the staff, physicians, patients, and families Maintains surgical instrument sets and equipment and ensures proper sterile conditions. Cleans used instruments after surgery (this process may require assembly and maintenance of some instruments for proper cleaning and sterilization). Ensures proper sterile conditions, orders supply, stocks, and maintains storage areas in the Operating Room for service. Assists in transporting patients. Assists RN in maintaining a safe environment for the patient. Demonstrates a broad range of knowledge with proficiency in preparation of surgical procedures and has versatility in applicable surgical technologist duties role if needed. Participates in orientation, performance improvement activities. ongoing competencies, education, and staff development. Shares information and reports significant changes and./or abnormal findings to appropriate team members. Other duties as assigned.

Pay:

$27.00 - $35.00 per hour
