A Surgical Technician or Technologist assists with surgical operations. Prepares the operating room and equipment before a procedure, and helps surgeons and nurses during the procedure. Works in hospitals or other healthcare facilities.
Maintains operative care standards according to AORN guidelines.
Preparation and Setup:
Stocks rooms, cleans equipment, and prepares supplies based on surgeon and anesthesia needs.
Surgical Support:
Assists with patient positioning, surgical hand scrubs, counts, and Time Out procedures.
Safety and Infection Control:
Identifies and addresses safety hazards, follows universal precautions, and infection control protocols.
Accountability and Flexibility:
Organizes tasks to meet patient and unit needs, adapts to changes, and stays current with education and policies.
Physical Requirements:
Frequent hand and finger use (e.g., to operate a computer keyboard). Lifting and carrying items up to 40 lbs. (e.g., boxes, equipment, IV solutions), with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to stoop, kneel, or crouch for tasks such as retrieving items from lower shelves or filing in low drawers. Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods, as the position may require. Capacity to operate job-related equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
