JOB SUMMARY
The Surgical Technician works alongside surgeons, surgical assistants, nurses and anesthesiologists to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures by handling the necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Certificate or associate's degree in surgical technology
Experience:
Two or more years of related experience, sterile processing experience preferred.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Directly assists the physician and nurses with procedures in the operating rooms 2. Performs standard scrub duties 3. Sets up sterile table with instruments, equipment, supplies and medications 4. Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization 5. Ensures all equipment is functioning 6. Preps patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting the surgical site 7. Assists with properly positioning the patient on the operating table 8. Operates various surgical and medical equipment in the operating room 9. Passes instruments to the surgeon during the procedure 10. Accounts for needles, instruments, and sponges during and after surgery 11. Assists with terminal cleaning of the operating room 12. Maintains inventory levels for the operating room and ASC 13. Orders supplies from Materials Manager as needed 14. Maintains service contracts and preventative maintenance measurements for equipment 15. Participates in Quality Assessment activities as directed for the continuous improvement of patient care and clinic business 16. Helps transport patients from the operating room to the recovery room 17. Properly cares for specimens by packaging them for laboratory analysis 18. Has regular and predictable attendance 19. Adheres to RRSC policies and procedures 20. Complies with safety regulations and maintains clean and orderly work area 21. Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Basic knowledge of medicine, biology, psychology, occupational and life safety Ability to use surgical equipment and instrumentation Ability to comprehend speech and effectively communicate with other operating room team members Must follow, convey and understand written and oral instructions Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships Compliance with continuing and mandatory education programs Ability to respond quickly when priorities and/or the patient's condition changes Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks Ability to function independently without constant supervision

Ambulatory Surgery Center Physical Conditions:
Must be able to sit and/or stand for prolonged period of time Must be able to bend, crouch, stoop, reach, twist and stretch Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate office equipment, etc. Must be able to lift, pull, and push with assistance of one other person, the weight of the average patient Must be able to work as scheduled—typically from 07:30 to 15:30 M-F, and some weekends
